You will be fine - tonnes of tapas but according to dp the place de jour is Azurmedi....

GiddyGiddyGoat · 01/08/2016 22:05

Blimey Lalsy, I wouldn't want to share a bedroom with one of

Lalsy · 01/08/2016 22:24

Hell no! Shock.

Ooooh, GGG, you will have a lovely time.

BeachysSandyFlipFlops · 01/08/2016 22:26

Good news from dd1, thanks for thinking of her. Friend out of hospital and they are now ensconced on a nice island for a relaxing few days before coming home. She's back on Saturday - I'm very excited Grin No pine martens as far as I can tell, but I'm sure she's had her fair share of creepy crawlies....

This bloody rain, tipping down here!

On open days, we did very few I'm afraid, but I agree, the town and accommodation seemed more important than the course (which I know is wrong!)

DS is not very happy at the moment. Hugely up and down, but we are working with 'those who know' to get him sorted Sad might be a long haul....

When are you down Rose? Need a full English?

MrsSchadenfreude · 01/08/2016 22:40

GGG - there is always McDonalds... GrinGrinGrin

She wants to do French and Theatre Studies, hence the small number of universities. She is currently in a rage because she can do a joint honours in German and Theatre Studies at Warwick, but not French and Theatre Studies (TS gets relegated to minor status). The grades needed for IB seem to differ quite wildly. RG unis seem to get that it is tough, and give reasonable offers accordingly. Other mediocre universities ask for ridiculous marks like 38/45 - Oxford asks for 38 or 39/45, FFS.

GiddyGiddyGoat · 01/08/2016 23:04

Hmmm, Yes that is quite niche! It would have to be a BRILLIANT course to balance out the 'wrong' (for her) location though don't you think... ?

Lalsy · 01/08/2016 23:26

I think the town really matters if it is eg Aber/St Andrews/Bangor/London/Manchester - ends of spectrum, sort of thing.....

MrsS, if that is a question of % has she checked module details (eg whether any TS-related mods in French, or whether they have "modularity"). dd's course is officially 50:50 but next year will look like 75:25 to the naked eye. The courses she looked at all had different regs/systems for their JH and it was a nightmare nailing it down and working out whether they were actually different or not. Very time-consuming and dull.

Great on dd, Beachy but boo on ds. Hope not too serious.

BD, do take some time. You have been under pressure for so long, your health and wellbeing is really important.

bigTillyMint · 02/08/2016 01:21

MrsS, re Open Days. Not essential but really useful could go when offers are given BUT then she may have applied to places she doesn't actually like IYSWIM. When I went with DD to Sheff, every prospective student wad with at least one parent. DD said she and her mates ere the only ones without parents at the other two. I think it could be a bit miserable going on your own (DD would never do this!) as everyone else is with someone IYSWIM.
Agree with all other Crepey advice. Of course!

Beachy, glad to hear all good with your DD. Sorry to hear about your DS though Flowers Glad you are being supportive and doing the right things.

Lalsy, your poor DS - I was actually shaking with laughter at GGG's advice ... My DS wouldn't have contemplated staying in the room Grin

Slept 8 hours, woken by music (and dreadful drumming) outside somewhere, but all quiet again now so I may have another snooze till breakfast Smile

bigTillyMint · 02/08/2016 01:38

Oh and MrsS you do not need to be there at 9. DD has arrived around 11 for each one and still gone to talks/seen accommodation and all that just fine!

'Indefinite Wallows In Squalor' is a good title for a teen memoir GGG.

BD I wish (sort of) I could relieve you of nit duties. You have too much to deal with as it is.

BTM - the drumming wasn't me. promise.

Lalsy, BTM, Beachy and others please remember all your uni wisdom for us downstream.

It rained more yesterday in Tenby than it did in the whole of July. Somehow I don't think that will effect Rudy's future hol plans as pretty sure West Wales not on the cards.

Left dd's with telly and pizza last night and had lovely meal in Blue Ball (remember it, Herbs?)

DH not well this morn. Don't think it's food poisoning.

Stropps, water Pokémon is in Weymouth.

Booked for the BFG this morning and spa afternoon tomorrow. Hopefully some sunshine b4 we leave for

wordassociationfootball · 02/08/2016 07:37

overnight with friends on Fri.

MI re: your novel. Howabout an editor read and feedback. It can be game changing. The Litererary Consultancy are VG but you can't pick who you get. Emma Darwin is fab.

motherinferior · 02/08/2016 07:39

I would like just to share the fact I am having a vile period AND hot flushes.

As you were. Beachy and Rudy, much son-directed sympathy.

BD, take care.

I've actually had the first stage of that, WAF, courtesy of generous friend and her mate who is a freelance editor and it was indeed game-changing, you're totally right. I may do the second stage with my money from my father....

Blackduck · 02/08/2016 07:50

WAF thanks for the offer :). We have nuked the bastards with heavy duty chemical stuff and this mornings comb revealed no more adults so we are hopeful! Off to buy tea tree.

I think location is important but perhaps seeing Unis outside of open days is also helpful - a bit more 'real'? Friends daughter went to Aber and loved it.

Going back some years (15ish?) DS rejected Exeter because of a visit when he had been v keen on the course. I think it is v important to visit if you are going to spend such an important time of your life there.

Feels (& looks) like November here. Berluddy British summers.

Rosebag · 02/08/2016 08:07

MrsS I not think its mandatory to have visited a Uni but probably advisable if its a bit more of the unknown. Even then one doesn't have to go to every talk and every presentation...and most are repeated later on in the day for students who can't get there in the morning. DS1 had to be dragged and I'm pretty sure with the ones I sent him to on his own, he never actually got there and had a jolly day out instead. DS2 was completely the opposite and wanted to go to everything and sometimes more than once. That said, he was very keen on Warwick on paper, and really didn't like it when he visited so it was worth the visit, I guess.

Rudy is DS2 more of a candidate for a gap year?

Poor MI The only compensation for hot flushes is the (eventual) lack of periods.... Flowers

lalsy Shock re belligerent small mammals invading Ds's bunk...I'd run away screaming in my nightie...

Waf weather aside, your Wales sojourns sound like us when we're at the flat..fun wet weather plan in place where needed and wait for the rain to pass, with a smattering of spa, and good food for the adults. Hope DH is ok?

Beachy you bet. Driving down tomorrow and staying til about 15th. Will be in touch. Sorry about Ds... Sad Flowers

GGG will have another look at that swimsuit.

Ok...off to a teachers meeting. DD is getting hair cut and packing meanwhile. DS2 flies in this evening and is full of what a great time he's had, if the whats app messages are anything to go by. No mention of the offending toe...

bigTillyMint · 02/08/2016 08:10

DD has found the visits v useful re size/position of uni in city, ethnic, etc mix of students and also what the city looks like for socialising Grin
Her bf is much more laid-back and visited his firm and insurance on Offers Days. She is a bit Confused at his firm as it is mainly white and very MC and he is not Grin

We have done the War Remnants Museum - DC moaned before, but we're actually v interested and could explain it all to us as they have both done Vietnam War for History GCSE. Then shopping in a market-style air-con mall where DD bought her much wanted "hippy festival trousers" and nice smoothies in air con bar. We habe managed to dodge the rain so far!

bigTillyMint · 02/08/2016 08:15

WAF you sound like you are finding lots of great things to do despite the Welsh weather. And some teen-free time Envy!

MM what has happened to the weather? It was sunny and hot before we left Confused

MrsSchadenfreude · 02/08/2016 08:29

I am yearning for the menopause. You can set your watch by my periods. Sad

Thank you for the help re visiting on open days. I think if we can't make an open day, then going at a weekend during term time, or half term, is a good one. Do universities still interview?

herbaceous · 02/08/2016 08:48

You can set your watch by my hot flushes. One an hour. Mainly at night. Restful especially when X boned with DP's relentless wriggling due to being covered in mossie bites. Not everything in paradise is rosy!

hattymattie · 02/08/2016 08:50

Mrs S - only Oxbridge interview - the rest don't as there are too many applicants. For what it's worth - both my DD's have chosen towns relecting the town they live in here (St Ger). DD2 really thought she wanted London until she visited friends in the year above and saw the squalor and expense.
I found it useful to accompany DD2 to York as they did separate tour/talk for parents and also I was able to chat with lots of other parents (mainly from London) which was interesting. By the way, somebody told me at Warwick, they all live in Leamington Spa in year 2.

Lalsy - hope scary pine martin has been caught and released into the wild.

I'm having a remarkably ok menopause so far - maybe I haven't started yet but I am quite old. I'm dreading the onslaught.

Stropps and BD - hope you're doing OK.

Beachy - glad all is well with the girls and sorry to hear about DS.

NU - I'm sorry - I missed congratulating you on your amazing marriage. Well done.

Here it is raining for the first time in a month and I advised Cremo that she wouldn't need a raincoat Confused.
