Tying up hair

What do you use to tie up your hair, and still look stylish?
I'm wary of adopting a middle aged schoolgirl look.

I like the anti snap elastic pony bands in Boots. They're made of clear plastic so don't really show.
Sometimes I put my hair in a ponytail and then take a small section of the ponytail and wrap it around the base, covering the band, secured underneath with a grip.

When I had longer hair, I used to put it up in a loose bun but attach it with a hair scroo or maybe two.
