Wedding in Italy

Help! My son's getting married in Sorrento in September. How can I take my (big) hat ? Will British Airways let me put it in the overhead locker (if it fits...); should I put in in a separate suitcase and check it in as an extra bag? Should I DHL it to Italy?

Ideas really welcome!

A wedding in Italy sounds lovely!

Maybe for hand luggage take a bigish plastic bag and put your hat in it? And a wallet with your essentials in maybe... And keep it by your feet so you can keep any eye on it.

Or just lay it out in the suitcase so it sits on top and make sure its not going to get squashed by stuffing it and padding it out?

Overhead locker could work, only I'd be worried it would get squashed with everyone elses luggage!
