What age is too old for long hair?

I'm 41 but don't really look it. Being chunky makes me look younger! I have dark brown hair which reaches my shoulder blades/bra strap area. I have really nice, thick hair. It's a bit like Kate Middleton's. But I have been thinking of going shoulder length because it might be more flattering.

I think (IMHO) the issue of colour is more ageing than length

Absolutely. Block colour that no longer suits the person's skin tone is hideous, far worse than natural grey hair. It can happen at any age, I have 2 colleagues in their 30s, both dye their hair and one has a colour with variations in tone that suits her and looks great and the other is going down that dark block colour look that even at a young age is beginning to become aging.

Long grey hair can look amazing.

I do think it is more of a 'Western' thing to chop your hair off once you start getting past 40. I really don't know why. I think some short hair dos look awful!

Eliza you have nice hair and you look great btw Smile

Long hair all the way!

ErrolTheDragon · 03/07/2016 23:58

I've always had long hair, straight but pretty thick, can't imagine what else would suit me - it's never been 'styled' just trimmed and some shaping at the front a couple of times a year. Must have saved me a fortune over the years! I guess it depends how it looks when it starts to grey or maybe it'll just fade as its blonde... I'm 55.

If you like it, keep it as long, for as long, as you want!

Depends on the hair condition, the style, the face shape, the colour etc. etc.

Not every face suits a crop or bob. I think it's a lot easier to add interest to short or mid-length hair, whether with colour, layers or different ways of styling.

I had my hair chopped into a shortish bob and am now growing it out again as I was fed up having no option to pull it back for the gym, or wear it up for a night out.

I had a great aunt who still had long hair when she died aged 94. Everyday she wore it down in plaits, but for special occasions she pinned them up like Helga from 'Allo 'Allo.
She looked fabulous.

I'm nearly 65 and have long hair. It's a very strange concept that older women are not allowed to have long hair. Some people have the face for short hair, I don't

torthecatlady · 04/07/2016 00:13

I laughed at the death comment Grin

I have below bra strap length hair and am beginning to doubt it too in my mid 40s. I love my hair and would never go short but I'm wondering whether shoulder length would be better. I'm concerned that what I hope looks long and beautiful, actually makes me look like a witch.

Grassgreendashhabi · 04/07/2016 08:13

I have waste length. I'm nearly 40.

I'm not going to cut it. !!!!

I love long hair.

Eliza22 · 04/07/2016 08:14

BumWad. Thanks. That was it "long". Now, it's at that bloody dreadful "mumsy bob" phase. I will persevere!

polyhymnia · 04/07/2016 09:05

Colour, condition, style all more important than length. And colour can be grey if it's a 'good' grey in excellent condition, not a dreary iron/ salt and pepper.

CoolToned · 04/07/2016 09:13

I just had my hair cut to shoulder-length and I really regret it. I think I look younger with long hair.

Reed88 · 04/07/2016 10:04

I say there is no age limit! If hair is kept in good condition and suits your face shape then long hair will always look beautiful - and I personally think it makes someone look youthful!

I cut my hair short 2 years ago anddd now I am back in the long hair category- I won't be changing it again!

ApostrophesMatter · 04/07/2016 10:14

It depends very much on the person. Some can get away with it but on others it looks flat, straggly and dull and is very ageing.

Poker straight long hair only looks good on the young, imo.

Crusoe · 04/07/2016 16:57

Well I'm 47 and growing mine long after years of short crops.

specialsubject · 04/07/2016 20:04

Your hair colour will get lighter as you age, and that with grey suits an older face. Look at the boots anti ageing ad for a cautionary tale - the ballerina is only 52 and looks a decade older due to blackened hair and eyebrows. And don't buy the cream as it clearly doesn't work!
