?
Please don't let this descend into a gender issue- quite happy to discuss male politicians too.

But if she is to be PM as looks likely she needs some serious intervention. Her outfit today was ghastly- a cheap shot a wearing tartan to unite the UK.
Her blouse is gaping around her tummy showing skin.

Since she's been in politics, her hair has gone grey, she has terrible eye bags, and she looks much older than she is imo.

Yes, of course her work is the most important thing, but over the years her outfits have been a huge distraction - the garish patchwork coat, the evening dress showing her shoulders , and more....

OP posts:
Fuzzypeggy · 01/07/2016 10:24

Good point about merkel, she does seem to adopt a look that can't be much commented on, like a mans suit. Which very much backs up this point, that to be a female in the public eye is all
About what you look like. How depressing.

TheNaze73 · 01/07/2016 10:24

To dress how she likes and ignore judgey comments from people who should know better

Deux · 01/07/2016 10:33

What's interesting on this thread is that the OP actually noticed all these things about Theresa May.

I didn't notice any of these things as I wasn't looking out for them.

I did find myself listening to what she had to say which is what I want from a politician. I wasn't distracted by her appearance in any way. That's a good thing in my view.

TheBathroomSink · 01/07/2016 10:34

I thought Theresa May looked fine. Sarah Vine, however, proved every bad thing that's been said about cropped wide leg trousers.

Floisme · 01/07/2016 10:36

I like it that she's deep into middle age and doesn't try and hide it. If a woman with grey hair and eye bags makes some people uncomfortable then that's their problem.

I also like it that she can think about heavyweight stuff and clothes at the same time and I hope she doesn't lose her nerve and start sticking to a safe uniform. I prefer someone who likes her clothes and gets it wrong sometimes.

And I like it that at least if I ever got stuck in a lift with her, we'd have something to talk about.

AnecdotalEvidence · 01/07/2016 10:53

she needs some serious intervention
Fuck off does she! How incredibly bloody rude.

FWIW I am older than she is as are many of my friends. And we aren't grey haired- or dyed.
So there's something wrong with her because she is naturally grey?
What exactly would you like her to do about that?

She has tummy and grey hair because she is a normal 59yr old woman! She is perfectly presentable. I dare say she doesn't give a shit about your standards or fashion advice. I like the fact that she is real - we need more women in public life who look like her.

S&B is where women ask for advice for themselves - it shouldn't be a place to slag off other women.

SonicSpotlight · 01/07/2016 11:02

If Sarah Vine were to ask for advice I'd recommend The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector. Just the thing for when you've overdone it with the nail brush trying to get the blood off.

Hear Hear.

If you're so busy making judgements about what she looks like, then you're taking "clothes are important" too bloody far. The UK is in crisis FFS!

Truckingalong · 01/07/2016 11:03

I am heartened by so many people on here challenging these outdated views on women being judged by their appearance. Perhaps there is progress after all!

LaCerbiatta · 01/07/2016 11:15

I'm with you OP. S&B is to discuss fashion choices be them ours or women in the public eye. And we discuss women's fashion choices not men's because we are women and that's what's interest us (and men's clothes are boring!!). And anyone who says that as a politician your appearance is not important is totally deluded!

Disclaimer: haven't seen any pictures of Theresa May recently and don't yet have an opinion on whether she needs mumsnet's style advice or not ;)

dudsville · 01/07/2016 11:19

OP, I disagree that this being S&B means it's ok to pick apart anyone who gets photos of them taken and published. As pp's have said, someone may post a pic of themselves or something they are considering buying, or we may think about celebrities who are all about image. That argument doesn't work here because TM is in the public eye for being a politician.

Floisme · 01/07/2016 11:22

I think the point is that Theresa May is a politician who also likes her clothes. One of the very few upsides to this fuckbasket would be if she could show the world that the two things are not mutually exclusive.

needastrongone · 01/07/2016 11:24

If you are in the public eye based on your appearance, that's one thing. TM isn't. She's in the public eye as she the Home Secretary.

She also hasn't posted a picture of herself on here, asking for style advice!

Fuzzypeggy · 01/07/2016 11:31

Those of you saying she is in the public eye and therefore her fashion choices can be commented on are effectively saying that because she chose to be a politician, she deserves people to comment negatively on her grey hair and eye bags? Because she chose to be a politician? That's awful. And I think that any of us working in offices for example, if people were commenting on our appearance and eye bags and tummies, we would feel outraged and violated. She's just doing her job.

SonicSpotlight · 01/07/2016 11:45

I may borrow fuckbasket.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 01/07/2016 11:46

I'd say wear comfortable shoes as you don't want to have sore feet when you are running the country.

FoxesOnSocks · 01/07/2016 11:50

Just put her name into google images and every picture she looks well dressed.

Leaving semantics and decorum aside, the reason this is a gender issue is because you have started a thread about her, and not the others who are considered in the running for PM, plus the fact that of all f them she is better looking and presented. Boris's hair has been made fun of, that is true, but what else?

Have you ever said that Gove could sort himself out as he looks like Penfold's grandfather? Did you start a thread commenting on Boris needing an intervention on his shirt and tie combinations, or he needs to sort out his jowls? I think he was the first name thrown out there to be next PM, I'll check back a week shall I to see what people said on the other threads about the men's style will I?

There's must be some seeing it's just about the style of the next PM and not based on thier sex.

VikingVolva · 01/07/2016 11:59

Men in the role do have uniform - the suit and tie, and usually receive comments on their appearance when they depart from the norm (mad hair. Hush Puppies, donkey jacket), or on mufti days (golfing with other world leaders, papped on holiday).

Women seem to get it much more, and much more intrusively. Except those (like say Shami Chakrabati) who have adopted the suit-as-uniform approach. As have Merkel/Clinton. Takes appearance out if it. Which is a good thing in a non-decorative role.

Floisme · 01/07/2016 12:12

A uniform can work well if you're not interested in clothes but Theresa May is. My fashion advice to her would be to hold her nerve and not to follow the safe trouser suit road. That may be the right choice for Clinton and Merkel but it clearly isn't who May is.

Help yourself, Sonic Grin

BackforGood · 01/07/2016 21:24

Totally disagree with you, OP that S&B is a place to slag people off.
I really admire the folks who hang around the S&B boards - they help people who post asking for advice. They NEVER just pick on people and start criticising them like you have.

Calling "lighthearted" because so many people have picked you up on what youve said just doesn't cut the mustard.

Nettletheelf · 02/07/2016 00:08

I bloody love her. Go Theresa. She'll show those idiot Tory men who's the mummy.

And, even though it has no bearing on her abilities as a senior politician, I also love her shoes and I was coveting that funnel neck 'space' jacket. Which she got from Top Shop, apparently. She rules!

Youfromthefuture · 02/07/2016 00:14

Seriously, OP? This is what you have taken from the events of the past week? That Teresa May dresses badly?

There are no words.

GertrudeSmellsDivine · 02/07/2016 00:31

This is a joke yes?

nooka · 02/07/2016 00:39

Looking at Google images she looks wholly unremarkable to me. A generally well dressed older woman.

Except for these boots perhaps :)

Really? You and your frineds are 60+ and you all have naturally un-grey hair?

Have you known these friends long or did you deliberately wait til you were in your 50s to make friends with genetically-very-lucky-un-grey people?
