?
Please don't let this descend into a gender issue- quite happy to discuss male politicians too.

But if she is to be PM as looks likely she needs some serious intervention. Her outfit today was ghastly- a cheap shot a wearing tartan to unite the UK.
Her blouse is gaping around her tummy showing skin.

Since she's been in politics, her hair has gone grey, she has terrible eye bags, and she looks much older than she is imo.

Yes, of course her work is the most important thing, but over the years her outfits have been a huge distraction - the garish patchwork coat, the evening dress showing her shoulders , and more....

OP posts:

Since she's been in politics, her hair has gone grey

She's stopped pretending it isn't grey - as she is almost 60 it's hardly surprising that she has grey hair. As she has been an MP since she was 40 then she probably has become more grey over the years, how is this a problem?
I can't imagine anyone expecting a male MP to dye his hair.

Charlieandlola · 30/06/2016 23:22

I think most of us would have grey hair and baggy eyes if we were Home Secretary. It's the biggest job in Govt I think . Think 4 hours sleep a night for 6 years and you are nearly there .

Utterly depressing that she should be criticised for these things . She's 60, a Type 1 diabetic and a bloody impressive female role model . She's done loads to advance women in Parliament. Setting aside party differences we should be celebrating her not complaining she's got grey bloody hair !

RaisingSteam · 30/06/2016 23:30

The distraction is because there are SO FEW women of her age in senior positions and in the public eye, (and I exclude models, actors and TV personalities who have wardrobe departments and makeup artists running around after them) we don't know what normal professional women in their late 50s look like, especially with Shock their natural hair colour. So we can't help pointing and gaping because it's such a freak show to see a politician who's not a man in a dark grey suit.

Say what you like but it's utterly missing the point. She is not under any contract to "flatter" her features or dress to some kind of fashion standard. She clearly likes her clothes and is comfortable with her body, I think she projects appropriate authority TBH. She also has far more important stuff to worry about.

VulcanWoman · 30/06/2016 23:32

What about Corbyn, are his shirts and jackets a size too big or what, he needs a good Obama suit.

ExitPursuedByBear · 30/06/2016 23:37

This makes me sad.

Or cross.

Or despairing.

needastrongone · 30/06/2016 23:39

I'm really sorry to comment again, but this thread has saddened me. Are we so conditioned to consider a woman's appearance before her contribution? Really? Are we?

Can we balance this out now by commenting on Michael Goves chosen attire for his leadership campaign launch?

Hockeydude · 30/06/2016 23:41

She looked fine today. End of

It is kind of terrible to dissect people's appearance.

The grey hair comment is terrible. Hey Theresa get those chemicals onto your body or we can't look at you Confused

ImGoingToTeabagYourDrumKitDale · 30/06/2016 23:43

After her speech today, I actually found myself thinking actually she probably is the right person for this job, at no point did I even notice her suit or grey hair.

She's a professional, she's not in a glaring pink tutu with fairy wings on, as long as she looks smart and hygienic I can't see the problem, both of which she does Hmm

ExitPursuedByBear · 30/06/2016 23:50

Women eh? There own worst enemies.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2016 23:54

I've had approx 100,000,000,000,000 thoughts in the past week about our politicians but not one of those thoughts has been about their sartorial choices.

MitzyLeFrouf · 30/06/2016 23:55

I tell a lie, I've just this moment seen Michael Portillo wearing a lurid green shirt on This Week and thought 'yikes!'.

lastnightiwenttomanderley · 30/06/2016 23:56

Creeping - that's our church, she normally goes to the early service so, frankly, looks a damn sight better than I do at 8am on a Sunday!

Also see her a lot doing the food shopping, again always very normally dressed. No, I don't really like the current hairstyle but overall, I think she's generally pretty well put together.

springwaters · 30/06/2016 23:56

It has been a week full of shocks

My greatest shock of today is that Theresa May is 59.

blowmybarnacles · 01/07/2016 00:07

She is like all of us, some days she gets it right, some days she gets it wrong, both in life and what she decided to wear that morning.

ZaraW · 01/07/2016 05:59

Agree with everyone else judge her on her actions, she looks fine. And as for the poster who said the French have style in their DNA they don't. There are an awful lot of them who are very badly dressed.

insancerre · 01/07/2016 06:04

Well she could have borrowed some of Angela Merkel's jackets. She seems to have a few
But I guess that's out the window now they are not speaking anymore

BTW this is a ridiculous thread
I don't think appearance should matter

P1nkP0ppy · 01/07/2016 06:05

What a bitchy thread op.
I presume you dress perfectly at all times?
I think she's an elegant lady, far better dressed than many other politicians, not that their attire bothers me at all.

Dontanalyseit · 01/07/2016 06:06

I think it's ok to comment on her clothes but there's not a lot she can do about the eye bags and I don't know a single woman without a tummy bulge Confused. As for the grey hair, well that's her choice.

Tbh all I've ever noticed about her is the shoes.

howtorebuild · 01/07/2016 06:28

I like that she and Heidi Alexander wear their natural hair colour.

KnockMeDown · 01/07/2016 06:39

I think that she generally looks great, and I remember the off the shoulder evening dress, and really liked that at the time.

More importantly, I think she will make a great PM!

Truckingalong · 01/07/2016 06:49

If we want to challenge you over your sexist bollocks, then this doesn't mean the discussion "descends". It actually means people bring along more enlightened views. I couldn't give a flying haggis what she wears. What I care about is her capability and leadership.

EdithWeston · 01/07/2016 07:08

She doesn't need to be stylish or beautiful.

What she does need is an effective wardrobe that does not hinder her (so that there is nothing to remark on) and will fit in with other powerful women.

So no more leopard kitten heels. Look instead to Clinton or Merkel, both of whom wear pretty unremarkable trousers suits in colours which ensure they stand out from the sea of grey/navy around them, but not so far as to be attention-grabbing.

TheoriginalLEM · 01/07/2016 07:14

Tell me...do you REALLY base your vote on appearances and fashion?

no wonder this country is fucked!

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 01/07/2016 07:15

I wouldn't give her any. And I feel quite sad about this thread.

This reminds me of Marcia Clark, the lawyer in the OJ Simpson trial. The press and public ripped her apart for her hair and clothes. All that criticism and negative publicity when she was trying to do her job and keep her family together in the midst of divorce and visitation discussions.

Sometimes I think we're our own worst enemies.

Cerseirys · 01/07/2016 07:16

OP, you say "don't let it descend into a gender issue" but can't you see that that's exactly what it is? Nobody would start a thread on how Boris or Jeremy Corbyn look like they've been dragged through a hedge backwards. Until women can achieve positions of power without people passing comment on their looks, it WILL be a gender issue.
