Hair - to pixie or not to pixie

I'm 37 and I've got quite a few silver strands. I usually dye it but lately it's been a disaster. The dye only lasts for about 2 weeks and it gets brassy really even before that - I've tried different brands of box dyes and even different hairdressers.

Does anyone have a tip for this?

On another related issue...my hair is wavy and about a bit longer than shoulder length and lately it's been a nightmare to take care of it as it gets completely unruly, parts of it are straight, parts are wavy and others are completely curly. I just don't know what to do with it anymore and I tend to keep it in a bun/ponytail. I was thinking of getting a pixie cut and getting rid of both problems at the same time. Does anyone here have a pixie cut? Do you recommend it?

I have one and I LOVE it . It looks great, and it's easy to take care of. The only downside is that I need to get it cut more often.

If you do go for a pixie crop, you'll get rid of 90%+ of the dye (depending on how long ago you last dyed it) so you can choose to start afresh or let your natural colour come through.

Wavy hair looks good while it;s short/shaped because you have the body to it, but once you go a few days over your hairs "Time" (mine was 5 weeks optimum, 6 weeks at the most) it goes to Hell in a Handcart.

I have wavy hair and I'm growing out my short crop (last had it cropped at Easter). I need to get it cut because otherwise it's unruly.

So once you get on the Pixie track, it's a blighter to get off it

Use a blue/purple toner if your hair goes brassy!

I'd find a really good hair dresser and take in some photos of what you like and ask what suit your face and life style. I wanted a pixie but the hair dresser recommended a longer one (so it's like a really short asymmetric bob) because I cba having my hair cut every 6 weeks.

If I blow dry it then the style will hold until I next wash it, I love my low maintenance sort hair.

I use purple shampoo to get rid of the brassiness (am growing the due out, just the brassy top layer to go)
And I say go for a pixie because I love mine

I've tried the purple shampoo but I've got really dark brown hair and it doesn't work. Heck I've even died it black last summer and it still got brassy after a few washes... My Hairdresser told me I should just give it up and get the whole thing proper ginger - not an option with olive skin and almost black eyebrows!

I had a pixie cut in last weekend; I love it! I keep forgetting though so get a lovely surprise every time I glance in the mirror.

Go for it! If you don't like it, it will grow out. It's only hair!

Do it! I've had a pixie cut for nearly eight years. I turned 40 at the end of last year and decided I was going to try growing my hair out - yeah, yeah, midlife crisis etc, but I was worried that as I got older, short hair might just read as "mum cut"/Judi Dench.

I HATE IT. I'm being reminded of all the reasons I got it cut short in the first place. I have very fine hair that's mostly straight but kinks out in strange places at the slightest hint of moisture. I also have a terrible cowlick at the front. Short hair was SO much easier to take care of, plus it really suits my face shape much more. I can actually see my cheekbones when I don't have random bits of hair flopping limply around them! Going back to the hairdressers on Tuesday to get it all chopped again, Judi Dench be damned.

Pspc - are you me?! I could've written your original post word for word!! I have considered a pixie cut or something slightly longer in the last week or so but I don't think I am brave enough. My hair is pretty awful now though so really I do t think a pixie could be any worse!

I wanted a pixie cut for years, but instead I had long hair that I pretty much always wore in a pony tail.

I finally got a pixie cut, and I absolutely love it . It really feels like me, and I love that it's different to the norm. I can't imagine ever having long hair again.
