Is Saltwater kind of like Boden but cooler?

Please say yes!

I bought a beautiful quality skirt from their 35% off 35th birthday the other week but a friend said she would put it in the same category clothes wise as Fat face or White stuff noooooooo!

"I do like Seasalt a lot but that might be because I have a rich fantasy life as a sculptor from the 1960s who wears a denim smock and conducts complicated affairs by moonlight."

Ha! I may have the same rich inner life. Though most of the rest of my clothes are from All Saints, Cos, and APC so perhaps my fantasy life is a bit confused.

I do think a lot of Seasalt stuff is a bit frump-o-riffic and/or risks making you look like half a pair of curtains, but if you figure out what styles suit you I think some of their dresses and coats are fantastic. Dresses are particularly good for those of us with boobage/hippage.

NewBallsPlease00 · 15/06/2016 00:37

It's pretty middle class mum slightly casual or bohemian uniform....
Boden has a few more contemporary pieces and Are starting to do more fashion led footwear etc to compete with j crew in USA. still sell monstrosity prints for adults tho...'fun'

eliednor · 15/06/2016 01:11

Seasalt is far frumpier than Boden or either of those shops. I'd point anybody looking to purchase a sensible, good quality raincoat in the direction of Seasalt

eliednor · 15/06/2016 01:17

Mint velvet for those who have sunk into a grey mire of despond.
Nods in agreement with Tanaqui. Grin

But I do like Hush so we'll have to disagree on that one.

My favourite is Avoca, glad to see that hasn't been mentioned negatively yet (there's still time!)

BettyBi0 · 15/06/2016 10:31

Oooh hadn't heard of Avoca before. They have a couple of really nice looking dresses but sadly too ££££ for me.

I NEEED one of their blankets now. Gorgeous!

I agree about Mint Velvet. But I would defend Hush's harem trousers to the death.

SapphireStrange · 15/06/2016 10:39

Sorry to be so emphatic about that as to post it twice. Blush

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 15/06/2016 11:29

Mint Velvet is all far too short and polyester. And grey.

Tanaqui · 15/06/2016 11:43

I was feeling very grumpy yesterday!

I have clothes from all the frump shops- fatface, white stuff, joules, but none of the drapey shops (cos, hush)- doesn't suit me! Cos/ whistles/ Hobbs- too expensive and too workwear for what I do.

Most of my clothes are boden/ gap/ new look/ and oddly, Laura Ashley!

Avoca looks lovely but too £££

brassywind · 15/06/2016 11:47

My 70 year old mum loves Seasalt ....

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 15/06/2016 12:06

Good for her.

It's clothes, innit.

knowler · 15/06/2016 13:26

It's been said ten billion times already on S&B, but if you like it, buy it. Seasalt can be a bit frumpy, but in my view it's good quality. I've got a great raincoat (can these ever be cool?) and a couple of really nice winter mini skirts from there which are not at all frumpy. HTH :)

I love fun prints

greengreenten · 15/06/2016 17:50

White stuff and seasalt all scream primary school teacher to me. I walk in, remember that I don't work with children and walk out the shop.
Maybe that's just me.

Runningupthathill82 · 15/06/2016 17:58

Not just you, green. My mum loves a Seasalt raincoat with Fat Face jeans (because she can buy a 12 in there and not a 14) and a White Stuff print tunic. She's a retired primary school teacher. I think that's their main customer base tbh.

AnnieNoMouse · 15/06/2016 20:25

Hmm - I wonder if there's a bit of a - well if a 50 year old wears it it must be frumpy - vibe around here? Hmm

inlectorecumbit · 15/06/2016 20:32

Just googled sea salt and it is a bit frumpy even for me.. (50+)

greengreenten · 15/06/2016 20:33

Ha ha Running! That made me smile. I think White stuff in particular have come up with a set of patterned fabrics and designs and don't seem to have moved on. I work with a chap who used to work in white stuff and he totally agrees. Grin

greengreenten · 15/06/2016 20:40

Bit of a detour but can I also express my Hmm at the press comments about duchess of Cornwall's style when she's wearing a white /blue (either way) stripe Breton, skinny jeans and converses/deck shoes. I know we all wear them, it's simple and classic. But it ain't breaking any style boundaries is it? Ignores own drawer of jack wills stripy topsWink

I think we're all getting more conservative, corporate brands and far less individual. Shame

greengreenten · 15/06/2016 20:42

And....I don't think this is 50+ bashing. The brands mentioned in here say 25-40 year old mumsy types to me.

228agreenend · 15/06/2016 20:54

If you find something that suits you in terms of style and colouring, then it doesn't matter where it's from. If you like it, wear it. Don't be put by your friend or mumsnet fashion police. A frumpy outfit on one person, would look stunning on someone else.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 15/06/2016 21:38

Well that's all right, then greengreenten because I'm 46 :o

And look significantly less ridiculous in the clothes someone's 70 year old mother might like than what the 20 year old next door and her friends wear.

(I draw the line at the Damart that my 75 year old MIL wears, mind. Suits her, but not for me. That said, I've seen 20 yo and her friends wearing stuff remarkably similar, sometimes!)

Sadik · 15/06/2016 22:06

I think it's very much about what fits you nicely too - if you find a brand where things come out your size/shape, they'll always look that bit more stylish
