Is Saltwater kind of like Boden but cooler?

Please say yes!

I bought a beautiful quality skirt from their 35% off 35th birthday the other week but a friend said she would put it in the same category clothes wise as Fat face or White stuff noooooooo!

I'm joking about trying to be cool btw. I do love the skirt and will enjoy wearing it regardless. It's just that on first browsing I would have put Seasalt in the same kind of category as Toast aiming for the timeless classics made of lovely materials type thing. So it could be mixed in with some Topshop or retro bits for a luxury scruffy chic type look. Or as Birdinthewings put it, 'well dressed toddler'. Thinking about it, that's kind of the look I'm aiming for haha!

Joules and Boden etc I would put in a more smart casual naff suburban yummy mummy box and WS and FF would be teachers (yes Tanaqui!)

Boden, Joules, Seasalt, White Stuff - all very similar really in terms of style.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 14/06/2016 19:43

Good to see that the Mumsnet fashion police are still keeping us on the straight and narrow Hmm

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 20:04

Oi, tanaqui, (up thread) plenty of over 50s like me who wouldn't go near Sea Salt, or FF, Joules!
I do get quite a bit from Boden because their stuff is good quality and can provide good wardrobe staples. . Agree with you that you need to choose carefully and avoid 'fun' patterns!

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 20:05

Definitely don't think Toast and SS aimed at exactly the same market.

Agree that a lot of it is frumpy. But I got this dress last week and it's lovely. Plain is the way to go.

AllPizzasGreatAndSmall · 14/06/2016 20:13

I don't really think Toast could be classed a cool either.

Tanaqui · 14/06/2016 20:13

Toast and hush overpriced and none of the models can stand up straight- aimed at middle aged women who think boden etc are frumpy. White company similar but better posture. Mint velvet for those who have sunk into a grey mire of despond. Cath Kidston accessories for those who want to feel cheerful, clothes for those who are relentlessly cheerful. Topshop for if you want the world to know you haven't got old or fat yet.

maddiesparks · 14/06/2016 20:21

Totally agree about Toast - shapeless, colourless and utterly boring.

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 14/06/2016 20:29

Ha ha! Yes, I used to wear a lot of White Stuff and Fatface when I was a TA. And Seasalt is very similar but harder to get up North. I'd classify Boden a bit differently as they have more plain stuff. Their cardis have fewer ruffles and dangly bits. A bit more grown up.

I love Hobbs and Whistles to look at but I just don't need that type of clothing unfortunately. Sigh.

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 20:35

Yes love Hobbs Whistles and LK Bennett. V different propositions from SS!

Moominsdottir · 14/06/2016 20:42

I always end up buying from Seasalt and White Stuff. What I'd like to wear is Cos, All Saints, &Other Stories, all that drapey cool asymmetrical stuff but they always look a bit rubbish on me, I think they just don't suit my body type or something!
So, even though they're not fashionable I think I actually look better in SS and WS than when I try to be fashionable or edgy.

thatorchidmoment · 14/06/2016 20:52

Tanaqui: I adore Toast, WC and Mint velvet. That's me put back in my box!

TresDesolee · 14/06/2016 20:57

I can't get past the fact that all of their clothes look like they faded in the wash. But then I do tend to dress like a Playschool presenter so have nothing to say about what's 'cool' tbh

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 14/06/2016 21:00

The factory shop near me sells:!White Stuff, Fat Face, Boden, Monsoon, Per Una and JL own brand.

All much of a muchness. With the horrific WS bringing up the frumpy rear. I luffs a tunic, truly I do. But not one made out of coloured sackcloth worn over beige cropped trousers with little tie things round the bottom and Birkendstocks.

So do I, Usual.
And they're Per Una.
I should probably drive myself out of town. Grin

BabyGanoush · 14/06/2016 22:47

Tanaqi, I really need to know what brands you are wearing now

OP, just wear what you like

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 22:48

Just went on the SS site and had a look round to see if I'd misjudged them but I found them ( and this is a very personal taste) worse than I'd remembered. Sludgy patterns and unattractive cuts. The most appealing things are the jute bags! And yes they did remind me of my brief visits to FF and WS shops. Give me Cos any time.

BabyGanoush · 14/06/2016 22:49

LK Bennett to me screams Kate Middleton on a less important visit

Their stuff is way too formal for me

BeckywiththeGoodHare · 14/06/2016 23:05

Seasalt: 'I live in Islington and have an imaginary beach hut in St Ives'
Joules: 'I live in Battersea and have an imaginary pony called Nugget'

They're right next to each other in my local shopping centre. One is all lighthouses and ropes, the other is all bunting and rosettes. I do like Seasalt a lot but that might be because I have a rich fantasy life as a sculptor from the 1960s who wears a denim smock and conducts complicated affairs by moonlight.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 14/06/2016 23:06

I bought some simple tees from White stuff, last year, but they didn't wash well. The jersey wasn't quite cut true and they've twisted. One I got from Next for half the price with no big expectations stayed nicer.

Ordered some stuff from Boden (with the discount, of course). Kept the kids' stuff, but sent mine back. It just wasn't me. Looked too officy and the colours didn't work on me.

Have loads of fatface. I currently carry a big tyre where my waist should be and their stuff actually doesn't cling to it. Particularly love their boyfriend shirts - actually cut well for a "mature" female figure and hang beautifully.

Bought some Seasalt the other week. Lovely organic cotton and I treated myself to some of their socks which are fabulous and seam free.

Sludgy colours suit me well, these days. My colouring is cooling with age and I suit deeper shades, but not overly bright ones (except raspberry!)

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 23:52

It costs so much to live in Battersea or Islington nowadays that the inhabitants probably shop in more upscale places than Joules or Seasalt!

polyhymnia · 14/06/2016 23:52

And I actually prefer Whistles to LKB.
