Is it ok or very definitely not ok to wear one's glasses on a chain around one's neck?

Only need glasses to read and write, can't wear them the rest of the time because then I go all woozy and swerve around like having had a lot of wine, but also never have them in the right room at the right time - or out with me at shops when trying to check the labels on chicken dippers and the like. Can I wear them on a chain - not a chain exactly but the current equivalent - around my neck or is that indefensible?

Um...I want to be kind but NO...absolutely not unless aged 70yrs or over.

SmileysPeople · 18/01/2007 22:26

Over 70....or so uber cool you make it cool....which rules out most of us, but maybe not you.

myturn · 18/01/2007 22:27

ROFL Definitely OK if you are Dame Edna Everidge..

otherwise NO NO NO NO NO.....

MerryMarigold · 18/01/2007 22:28

how about putting them in a little bum bag thing, or is that even worse? see if you can get a cool looking one?!

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:30

I'm 45 and quite frumpy but would never ever wear my glasses on a chain!
Neither would my mum - she's 72.

Oooooooooh HIJACK! Fortyplus...was it you who was recommending Woolacombe bay? We've booked a week there in July

ledodgy · 18/01/2007 22:32

Why not? If your other clothes are nice who cares?

RustyBear · 18/01/2007 22:34

I must be uber cool then - I have a chain and I'm only 50!
But what do I know - I wear shirts open over t shirts!

MrsJohnCusack · 18/01/2007 22:35

no - with a chain you will look like Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie....
Can you pop them on your head - that's what I do?

but then people go skiing and have their goggles on short stretchy ropey things round their neck don't they - maybe that would look OK? I think the idea is to keep it short, not have the glasses dangling around your bosom in a matronly fashion!

SmileysPeople · 18/01/2007 22:37

No Rusty just because you do it does not make you uber cool....you misunderstand.......although I'm SURE your glasses chain and open shirts are VERY cool

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:37

danceswithnewboots - I certainly did recommend Woolacombe to someone. You'll have a great time
If you like shellfish there's an amazing place where they sell it from home up on the road to Mortehoe. It was featured in one of the Telegraph food sections - my lot thought it was great, but I can't stand the stuff. It's just a house but is famous for miles around.

myturn · 18/01/2007 22:38

BECAUSE Ledodgy... no-one will notice the nice clothes you are wearing. They won't be able to see past the glasses chain which you should so not be wearing until you are drawing your pension, using a zimmer frame and wearing incontinence knickers. It is just WRONG WRONG WRONG!!

Edam · 18/01/2007 22:39

Only way to avoid having to put reading glasses on and taken them off again all the time is to have laser eye surgery from someone who can deal with presbyopia. You need a darn good surgeon with darn good equipment, though. Not just any high street clinic.

Wouldn't normally encourage anyone to have laser eye surgery as if something does go wrong, you can be left with permanent impairment. But it's the only total solution if you can't face a chain (and I agree with everyone else, not if you don't want to add 30 years to your age).

ledodgy · 18/01/2007 22:39

No you see I disagree I think it would look good like you don't care especially if the rest of your clothes are quite cool it would look nicely eccentric.

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:40

RustyBear - just accidentally clicked on your name when I cut & pasted and it sent me to your profile! Definitely time for us to start that oldies' thread!

eemie · 18/01/2007 22:40

Wooolacombe Bay - heaven

Glasses on chain - convenient, but only if:-

  1. glasses dead cool, e.g. pink tartan (possibly leopard print) frames. Takes the sting out of onset of middle age;

  2. glasses dead cheap, because wearing them on a chain is bad for them and they fall apart quicker.

I tried a chain for a while when I got fed up with needing glasses when I was downstairs and they were upstairs or vice versa (or verse vica). They fell apart quickly and I felt old.

The cure comes when your vision deteriorates enough to need varifocals and wear them all the time.

What about diamante ones like Dame Edna?

fishie · 18/01/2007 22:40

and they will bash about all over the place. varifocals?

RustyBear · 18/01/2007 22:42

Ignore them, twoisenoughmum, you go for it - but I'd get a cord, not a chain - chains tend to get tangled round the little bits that rest on your nose when you put them away - and you can't see to untangle them because you can't put your glasses on....

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:43

'The cure comes when your vision deteriorates enough to need varifocals and wear them all the time.'
Hey, girls... (or fellow old bags)I read something dead scary the other day about not wearing varifocals for driving as they create a 'blind spot' when you turn right out of a junction and then you get hit by another car coming from the left that you haven't seen.
Has anyone else heard that?

JackieNo · 18/01/2007 22:45

YOu can buy brooches you hang them through? The first 2 aren't too hideous.

RustyBear · 18/01/2007 22:48

fortyplus - better not start it tonight, as most of those eligible will probably be asleep!

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:48

I would bend over and they'd fly out and poke themselves up my nose!
And I still wouldn't know where I'd put them!

fortyplus · 18/01/2007 22:49

Rusty - you're probably right! Lots of my friends have to eat before 7 so they can get to bed by 9.30 without suffering indigestion

MrsBadger · 19/01/2007 09:30

Chains are a minefield - one of my (otherwise young and cool) colleagues has one and every time she wears it she looks like she's dressing up as her granny.
They're also wildly unflattering when you have the specs on as you get a big black line down either side of your face, which is very ageing.

Something you can put them in and take them out of, like the brooches Jackie mentioned - different shapes and colours here might do the trick, but also consider a tough bead necklace - like those nursing necklaces you sometimes see (or even a specially designed one thus ).

I have the opposite problem - I only need glasses for seeing things far away (bus numbers, menu boards etc) but don't wear them all the time. I tend to perch them on my head or hook them in my neckline by one arm, but this does mean I do sometimes drop them.
