Is it ok or very definitely not ok to wear one's glasses on a chain around one's neck?

Only need glasses to read and write, can't wear them the rest of the time because then I go all woozy and swerve around like having had a lot of wine, but also never have them in the right room at the right time - or out with me at shops when trying to check the labels on chicken dippers and the like. Can I wear them on a chain - not a chain exactly but the current equivalent - around my neck or is that indefensible?

you can get varifocals with just your reading prescription in - then you just wear uber trendy specs all the time and don't need to faff about taking them on and off

putting them on your head bends them out of shape.

glasses chains are for the over 65's only.

Ok, so I won't be wearing them on a chain. I like the look of those little brooches, Mrs Badger and Jackie No, thank you. Together with great advice from you lot, my mind was made up against wearing them on a chain yesterday. I had my lovely glasses (I do love them, wish I could wear them all the time) on a cord - not a chain - resting on my bosom as I was eating lunch with DS. Got up from lunch and lo! a little blob of hummus had fallen down on to the inside of one lens. Not generally a good look, I don't think. Very glad I noticed before I went off on the school run.

you can wear them all the time if you like! who do you use for your opticians? is it a chain or an independent?

You're very welcome... these young whippersnappers think they can have it all their own way, don't they?
Suggested min age so far is 43 - but maybe we should let the 40 year olds in?

WideWebWitch · 21/01/2007 19:48

No

Enid · 21/01/2007 19:52

it weakens the hinges too

apart from looking really really unstylish

colditz · 21/01/2007 19:52

No, God NO, what are you trying to do to yourself? You'll be asking if it's ok to use a zimmer frame next!

southeastastra · 21/01/2007 19:54

if that's the best place to keep them i don't see the problem with wearing them around your neck tbh. you might start a trend.

colditz · 21/01/2007 19:54

you if you do that

twoisenoughmum · 21/01/2007 20:48

Can I please join the oldies thread. I definitely qualify. Had my first DC at 38 and my second DC two weeks before my 41st birthday. Does that make me the oldest for first child?

I was pondering making beaded glasses chains... would anyone be interested do you think ?

suedonim · 21/01/2007 21:40

Hehehe, I sometimes have my glasses on a cord. It's so bl%dy annoying in shops to have to keep putting them on and taking them off repeatedly and then mislaying them in pocket/handbag/trolley/organic veg/cat biscuits/loo rolls. Only other alternative is to wear them half way down my nose and peer over them when not reading labels - not stylish either.

twoisenoughmum · 21/01/2007 21:45

Yes, Whizz, come on, start a trend...

something like this but maybe with more beads on & those rubber clip thingies on the ends??

twoisenoughmum · 22/01/2007 10:52

Whizz - yes, gorgeous. Like necklaces for glasses. What a brilliant idea ... def go for it. I'll be an early customer !

MrsBadger · 22/01/2007 12:07

whizz, they are pretty but still have all the disadvantages of cords or non-pretty chains (specs hang proudly on bosom, chain hangs down sides of face when specs on face etc)

Like the idea of a pretty bead necklace with a loop pendant you could hang them through though.

Whizzz · 22/01/2007 14:51

OK I will have a go at both types (things on ends and a loop in the middle to hang glasses on)
Watch this space as they say !!

Whizzz · 22/01/2007 15:14

MrsB - would the loop for the glasses need to be quite small do you think?? (sorry I am a non glasses wearer so can't experiment !)
Just wondering whether to try a beaded circle about 3cm across but I'm worried that the glasses might fall out or whether to try & use one of the rubber spectacle end things in the middle so hold one arm of the glasses more securely...

MrsBadger · 22/01/2007 15:38

3cm might be a bit big, but using a rubber thing might defeat the object of it looking like a pretty necklace when the specs aren't hanging on it.

NB I got the idea from the first link here , but the retailers have taken it off their website.

Whizzz · 22/01/2007 15:41

I wondered whether I could hide a rubber thing behind a bigger bead ??? I think I will have to do some testing !

MrsBadger · 22/01/2007 16:06

ooh, a couple more here and here - seems they use a premade ring, which is interesting.

RustyBear · 22/01/2007 16:19

I'd be a customer Whizz!

Oati · 22/01/2007 16:36

plenty to choose from here so someone must be buying them

Whizzz · 22/01/2007 18:14

Heres a quick trial beaded glasses chain
(I made it to short & I still need to get the rubber end things) but do you think the basic design looks OK or does it need more beads or dangly bits ???
