Teaching yourself to do new hairstyles?

Does anyone have any good tips for mastering new hairdos? I desperately want to learn how to do those plaits that go around your head, or something a bit different than a fine-haired sad ponytail, but don't know how to even begin. Any good videos? Tips?

I don't know about plaits but Cherry Dollface's videos on YouTube has helped me master barrel rolls, victory rolls and a whole host of other 40's/50's hairstyles.
