Bare legs with summer dresses for work

Hello!

What's the view on wearing (casual) summer dresses to work with bare legs?! Ok, or fashion faux-pas?!

I work in a really casual office - jeans and t-shirts are normal to wear - and have a couple of lovely summer dresses that its finally warm enough to wear them. Do I go bare legs with sandals though? My legs are ok - not exactly super-model and definitely not tanned, but not too scary. And I am the wrong side of 40, but don't really see how that affects things!

Sheer tights in summer just seems a little 'formal'. A little too Kate Middleton (I would if wearing a pretty dress and heels to a wedding for example|).

Any thoughts appreciated!!

Bike are you talking about make up rather than clothes?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/06/2016 17:32

I only wear sandals to work if wearing a long skirt or trousers. Nude tights or hold-ups otherwise.

KittyB52 · 25/06/2016 17:38

Nettle do you mean the washable cotton liners? I've just discovered them - haven't had chance to try them yet as I've had a week off work so have been able to wear comfy shoes. Grin

I do wear drawers, thank you. suddenly aware that her voice might be a leetle bit too loud Grin

Bare legs with dresses are fine providing they're knee length or mid calf.

Above knee length if you bend over or go up stairs if the skirt part of dress is too short you risk showing your knickers or parts of your upper legs that shouldn't be seen (very top part looks as if you have no knickers) seen this twice on my commute.

Any dresses where I think there may be a slight show of something I don't want I wear leggings - don't care if they're unfashionable!

SuperFlyHigh · 25/06/2016 17:41

Sandals absolutely fine. Been wearing pretty ones to work, even crochet espadrilles a few days.

nettle we have one particular girl who regularly wears a dress very similar to this, but sleevless and with cleavage, and shoes much like these. She is very tall, and the dress is very short. I must be an old fuddy duddy though, because that kind of skirt length + bare legs is pretty common, albeit with slightly more demure dresses.

Have you tried nude micronets? I wear these unless it goes over 26 degrees - then frankly they can be grateful I have any clothes on at all. I like to think they are less granny than normal nudes.

I bought some M&S 'bare' open toe tights today. Have just put them on. Dp didn't believe I was wearing tights until he touched my legs! They're lovely - look like my legs, but less manky!

namechangedtoday15 · 25/06/2016 18:28

No never. But that's because most legal firms require formal business dress regardless of weather. My friend (when we were both trainees) got a warning on her annual appraisal for not wearing tights in summer.

Am guessing in a more relaxed office environment it would be fine!

Every day in summer (casual office too). Age 48

MassDebate · 21/07/2016 18:20

I'm a lawyer in the City and always go bare legged in the summer. Not an eyelid has been batted, ever, in the last 15 years (skirts always knee length or below, mind). I'd probably either put some very thin tights on or wear trousers for a client meeting/court hearing but otherwise I don't believe it's an issue.

specialsubject · 21/07/2016 18:22

Why not? Covered shoulders to knees is office appropriate, no cleavage (not pretty) and if sandals ,tidy toenails ( doesn't mean plastic coated). But comfortable people are efficient people.

I wear Sally Hansen-ed legs with knee length skirts/dresses. I feel Sally Hansen is like tights without the heat. I would feel sort of naked without something on my legs, but good ole Sally works for me. Couldn't bear rights in this heat.

pitterpatterrain · 21/07/2016 18:58

Bare legs but with more knee-length work colour/style dresses, not summer garden party / going out / weekend type that seems to crop up like the backless type mentioned

We also get the odd couple of people wearing shorts that to me are more like hot pants - not a good professional look

Shallishanti · 21/07/2016 19:19

what are sally hansened legs???

NeonPinkNails · 21/07/2016 20:29

Our office is extremely casual and in this sort of weather I'm really grateful for that. I feel so sorry for anyone who has to wear tights and even more so for men in socks and proper shoes.

That said I'm always careful about too much flesh on display - it's an office not the beach and I don't think loads of cleavage, bare backs, bra straps on show etc is very professional. But clean bare legs won't hurt anyone :)

I had this dilema yesterday as I love my nylons. I like the security too of being held in so need to now wear shorts under said dresses. I reluctantly ditched the nudes and found couple calf length dresses and my milk bottles were ok in sandal type shoes with toes. Dont know why I worried as a colleague, also early 40s, then rocked up in a 1950s style halter dress above knee no tights and huge tattoo on arm! I have a tattoo on my arm (20 yrs old, 19 yrs loathed, result of too many 20/20s) but I would not dream of parading it around the office. Roll on winter. I miss my black 200deniers.....

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/07/2016 20:43

I used to work in a formal office and would wear knee length skirts without tights. I wouldn't wear sandals though! I think you need closed toed shoes in an office. And nothing sleeveless.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/07/2016 20:44

In a formal office. Also I used to use Sally Hansen too.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 21/07/2016 20:45

Shalli Sally Hansen airbrush legs. It's like foundation for your legs.

Pinkvici22 · 21/07/2016 21:54

Yep - bare legs for me (well I say bare...in work that means Sally Hansened for me too!!) with knee length skirts/dresses, but always closed toe shoes. I work in a very formal office and it's fine!

Middleoftheroad · 21/07/2016 23:28

Mine is pouch flappage, rather than fanjo. So I try to wear shorts or underskirt which are equal pain during summer. But no tights and my stomach in a bright summer dress - like a trifle on a trampoline.
