Wedding guest - floor length dress

shiftkey · 30/05/2016 10:38

I've been invited to a wedding that has a black tie dress code.

I'm looking for some inspiration as to where to shop online for a full length dress. I have no clue!

I'm on quite a budget which isn't helping. Size 12, 5'6" with 35" leg. Oh and it can't be grey (even though I love a grey dress!) as bridesmaids are in this.

I might lose the will to live if I google "floor length wedding guest dress" one more time.

might be worth a shot?

Needabiscuit · 30/05/2016 11:24

Where do you live?
Fonthill road in Finsbury Park north London had loads of shops with evening gowns

Caper86 · 30/05/2016 11:26

House of Fraser, John Lewis and asos all have big sales on today. If not, then I second TKMaxx!

Not sure of the sheer lace panel but otherwise a fairly glamorous dress for not too much cash Grin

RonaldMcDonald · 30/05/2016 11:34

I think the planet dress is nice and safe but that lots of the others look very strictly come dancing
I know she stated evening but she didn't mention fashion bypass

I wouldn't wear long no matter what the bride requests...mwah ha ha

Gruach · 30/05/2016 11:34

If black is acceptable?

RonaldMcDonald · 30/05/2016 11:37

That slit dress is nice but looks to be completely see through

newroundhere · 30/05/2016 11:43

Up to 20% of at Debenhams today as well - quite a few options in budget - and they have both Quiz and Little Mistress dresses on offer at the moment

For example, this is the same Quiz one as Ilovenannyplum mentioned but a little bit cheaper: www.debenhams.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prod_10701_10001_61252+269794_-1

Good luck!

Bad review but it's only one - worth a try?

I like this one -

That AX PARIS one is reduced in house of Fraser too and it's in five colours.

I'm not sure if it's a bit - frumpy? Though

mammmamia · 30/05/2016 12:14

Don't put that into Google. Just look at actual shops online. Try Very. Lots of brands and bargains.

Ahhh just copied the link and ^^ it's the same one. I love it in navy

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/05/2016 12:50

I reckon she'll still get a lot of non floor length dresses if people are only being told if they specifically ask so bride(zilla) might be in for a surprise.

Anyway, assuming that big breasts mean you would prefer to be able to wear a proper bra (big boobs here too) then how about:

Navy, top of budget but very bra friendly
French connection dark blue, £60
lace sleeves
pale blue
pink or navy

Sorry, lots of blue!

mrsmortis · 30/05/2016 13:24

I think this one is going to be a love it or hate it thing and it may not be long enough but:

shiftkey · 30/05/2016 15:59

Thank you! I honestly wouldn't have found half of these - as some of you have already pointed out I am useless at clothes shopping (especially for dresses).

StatisticallyChallenged I have said exactly the same about the female guests on the day! Now I know, I don't want to let her down though. I think I am going to have to order the first one you posted - it is beautiful! Might not work on my awkward figure but definitely worth a go.

Thanks again everyone Flowers

Just realised I linked to the petite version of that, if you search for the brand there is a regular sized version too

shiftkey · 30/05/2016 17:03

Yes it was out of stock but the site suggested the regular one and I've got it Grin thank you. Hope it's long enough now!

Bcbg is your friend! The USA site has lots of great deals too and they ship internationally....

thatorchidmoment · 30/05/2016 18:45

I have two unworn maxi dresses with tags that I'm about to put on eBay. One is ted baker size 4 and the other is an oasis small 14, so would probably fit if you are a booby 12. They are silk and v beautiful! If you are interested in either of them pm me and I could sort out a buy it now via eBay.
I know the Ted Baker one is grey and patterned, but just thought I'd show you as I love it! Never found an occasion to wear it and need to clear out my wardrobe.

No worries if they are not what you are looking for, but you have first refusal!

Thatorchidmoment thank you very much for thinking of me. They look like beautiful dresses but I can't get away with no straps I'm afraid. Shame because they look gorgeous!

bojorojo · 31/05/2016 10:32

Or hire one from Chic by Choice. DD just did this for a White tie do (long and formal) and dress was stunning. They send two sizes too.

Also black tie is normally optional regarding long, but if you will not wear the dress again, consider hiring. DD does not like to wear the same formal dress twice!

thatorchidmoment · 31/05/2016 11:09

The butterfly dress actually has a halter neck strappy arrangement. Found a stock picture for you as my photo didn't show it.

If that makes a difference, let me know and I can sort something out. Otherwise, happy dress-shopping! Smile

Nikeybikey · 16/05/2020 21:26

@Charll the thread is from four years ago. I think they've sorted it and been to the wedding by now
