Serums?

Do these work. Should I be using one? If so what? I am mid 40s.

What do you want the serum to do? Serums are designed to penetrate the skin and tackle specific skin issues, unlike a moisturiser which sits on the top. Issues could be dehydration, hyperpigmentation, dullness, fine lines, redness, clogged pores, etc., etc.
