Bob style fringe dilemma

I'm getting my hair cut and highlighted this afternoon.

ATM it's mousey brown, sitting like an ugly helmet on my head. I've been growing out a pixie crop for a couple of years.

It sits just below my chin, the back is overgrown.

I'm having a bob that sits just on my chin and having the back arched.

My dilemma is what to do with the fringe. I definitely want a fringe. I'm torn between thick bang fringe or a short, almost 1950s style fringe. Which do you prefer?

I have a slim, oval face. My hair is curly as it grows so I'm thinking the 1950s fringe would let me get away with the curl more whereas the longer fringe would probably need the rest of my hair to be straightened sleek everyday.

What do you think?!

I think it depends what kind of style you have. If you are a bit funky then the shorter fringe works, if you are more classic then a longer fringe.

But I am not a style queen so wait for others' advice!

Yes I would say it depends on your style. You could try long for a few weeks then get it chopped, or a short fringe would grow quickly anyway. It's hot in the summer with a fringe though!

I am big fan of the severe shorter fringe - brings a bit of edge, which I like. But as pp said, only if the rest of your style fits with that.

Hmm, I don't think I'm that funky. I like fairly unusual stuff but nothing off the wall. For example, if I buy blue jeans I'll get some that are an unusual blue. I do wish I was a bit more funky to be honest but that's another thread.

Bringiton Having any hair is hot. I had a short pixie for years and loved being cool in summer. But I'm determined to grow it out for a few years!

I used to have the very short fringe in my 20s but I was a lot more into that sort of scene then, with clothes and music. I'm just in the process of growing out the longer fringe which I really loved but wanted a change.

The short fringe might provide the impetus for you becoming more funky...

Bringiton You're right it might do. I do wear some quite funky glasses most of the time!

Do you think I can get away with a short fringe in my 30s? Should I be going for something more sensible? And do you think it suits blonde hair? Most of the pictures of short fringes are women with dark hair.

A longer fringe on a bob is better I think.

I have the sort of bob you describe (inverted, graduated at back, chin length at front), I get a fringe just longer than my eyebrows.

It fits better with the style imo, and there's enough length to pin it back if you want too.

If you go with the longer fringe and decide you'd like it to look more funky rather than classic you can always get it cut.

Go with the short fringe! I think you want to! It's only hair and 30 is young. I think you will have to "own it" as it's seen as a bit out there by some. Try and get a complete look together and be bold!

Why don't you get your hairdresser to cut it to the longer length and then see if you like it - if you feel you want to then take the plunge for shorter fringe you can get the extra length taken off.

Personally I prefer a longer fringe with a bob (but that may be because I'm a bit lazy with my eyebrow shaping and a long fringe hides them! )

Bringiton I think I do want the short fringe but I'm scared I'm not cool enough. Which is crazy, I used to have an ice white pixie then I grew it out a bit and had a Miley Cyrus with a star shaved into one side. That was only about three years ago.

I need to be braver. I think bows look lovely with a short fringe and could be a good way to funk it up on days when I'm a but more conservative (i.e. walking around the park with the dog in trackies and a hoody)

I do also love longer fringes though and I know they suit me. I just worry I'll end up looking the same as when I was 11.

Of course you're cool enough! You do have to look after your eyebrews and get good at cutting your own fringe though!

I have a bob which is very sharp, above jaw length, and with a short fringe - I love it, and get tons of compliments, even people stopping me in the street. My fringe is actually slightly arched/curved, which gives it a further point of difference. The only issue I would flag up is that as soon as it starts to get a bit shaggy it can look a mess, so make sure your hairdresser will give free fringe trims between cuts. I tend to need mine done every three weeks to keep it sharp looking.

I do mine myself. I twist the fringe so that it is ever so slightly shorter in the middle. Much more flattering to me than a blunt straight across.
