Anyone else find it impossible to wear heels?

Today, due to rain, I wore high heeled chunky boots with my jeans, in order to keep jeans off ground (and avoid embarrassing upward creep of water). I ended up walking like this: imagine you are standing with legs together, then bend as if you are going to sit on imaginary chair - then walk forward.

I looked ridiculous.

Can't do it. Can't do heels.

nor can I. I look f8cking ridiculous cos I can't walk in them.

expatinscotland · 12/01/2007 11:41

You only felt like you looked like this.

In truth, you didn't.

I took ballet for 12 years, so I never found wearing heels a bother.

But for the uninitiated, there was a gradual build up of heel height till they were able to walk comfortably in them.

Start w/a kitten heel and go from there.

A wedge or platform heel is also easier to wear for the novice, although heavier.

I love heels, but I don't like stilettos.

don't understand why people wear them either - they make your feet hurt. And they can cause problems with your back.

Difficult to get nice posh pair of shoes or boots without them though.

Cappuccino · 12/01/2007 11:43

I had my first pair of heels at 15 to wear as a bridesmaid to mum and stepdad's wedding

I stood with my legs so wide apart on all the photos everyone said I looked as if my horse had just run off from under me

don't wear them often now as they make the balls of my feet hurt

Tutter · 12/01/2007 11:44

my MIL says she can't not wear heels

seriously - something about her calf muscles

makes country walks slow and irritating

TheArmadillo · 12/01/2007 11:45

I know someone who said the same - thye had been wearing heels since such a young age that their calf muscles had shrunk and they couldn't put their feet flat on the floor. [

they managed to walk barefoot fine.

Tutter · 12/01/2007 11:46

just odd, imo

even her slippers have to have heels

fartmeistergeneral · 12/01/2007 11:46

Tutter, my sister was like that. She wore heels every day in life from the age of 14 and is now off them (sounds like an addict!), but it took ages for her to get used to walking on flatties. Her calf muscles had kind of adjusted to the heels and had tightened.

Can't be good.

I feel like a man in drag in heels, walking weird and legs too far out.

Mmmm...

Me. I really, really can't do them, they are so uncomfortable and impractical. I look at women skidding round Sainsburys in heels and think "FOOL"! NOw and then I bust out a pair or low skinny heels but I'd take a pair of flats any day of the week.
The amount of times I've been in a club dancing my socks off with friends and the next day their feet are in shreds and I'm still springing round.

ediemay · 12/01/2007 11:47

I wear them about 3 times a year and look like a cheap drag act

maewest · 12/01/2007 11:50

I worry about the transvestite thing too . And heels are no good for striding along with a buggy, merely sauntering.

fartmeistergeneral · 12/01/2007 11:51

I either feel like a man in drag, or a little girl pretending to be a woman.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 12/01/2007 11:52

I can dance all night in heels.

They're more comfortable than pointe shoes, though!

foxinsocks · 12/01/2007 11:54

I can't do them either - feels unnatural.

Think you have to be schooled in heels - lots of people I know who wear heels a lot say they have worn them since they were 15ish (when I was stomping around in doc martens!).

expatinscotland · 12/01/2007 11:56

It can take a lot of practice, particularly w/court style shoes.

fartmeistergeneral · 12/01/2007 11:56

yes, I was also a doc martens teen. You cannot progress from DMs to heels.

It's against the laws of nature.

Ah, see, I lived in France when I was 15 for a year.

Made all the difference in the world!

Still took ballet lessons whilst there, too.

TheArmadillo · 12/01/2007 11:58

I grew up in doc martens - they were soooo comfortable.

I don't wear them now only cos they take too long to do up and undo.

fartmeistergeneral · 12/01/2007 11:59

I still have mine and wear on the back of my dh's motorbike, to avoid buying m/b boots.

They take me back to the days of dancing at clubs, wearing them and NEVER MOVING MY FEET!!!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 12/01/2007 12:01

Yuk!

They draw all the attention to your feet, and not in a good way.

Lorina · 12/01/2007 12:02

If you have good posture it helps. Also relax and only go as fast as you feel comfortable. Its easy ,dont give up!
Its so nice to have heels for special occasions they make you feel so glamourous.

Tatties · 12/01/2007 12:05

I find heels too uncomfortable. I need my shoes to be very comfortable. I'll occasionally wear a kitten heel if going out, but anything more than that and I find myself wondering why the hell I did it...

PinkTulips · 12/01/2007 12:07

i can't walk in flat shoes

the day my mom starting letting me wear heels as a teen was the day i started to walk comfortably.... flat shoes kill my back too.

PinkTulips · 12/01/2007 12:09

i've always walked on tiptoe barefoot too..... never even noticed til a friend of my dads pointed it out when i was 12 and laughed his ass off at me
