Forties style dress

Please could you tell me what you think of this dress? I want to dress it up vintage, for events where I wear vintage-style (or actual, thank you Oxfam online) clothing and dress it up non-vintage for...when I just want to be wearing a blue dress. Do you think this one would work? Would I spontaneously combust in the fabric?

Thanks.

It's very pretty and would work for both. I love this style but it doesn't really suit me (sob)

DianaT1969 · 26/04/2016 21:42

It looks nice to me.
Lindybop have a similar shape in 97% cotton if you are worried about the fabric.

Its Ok, and cheap but this is better IMHO
or this at £25

MrsLettuce · 26/04/2016 21:50

Yes, the general idea would work well, the style of the dress is great. That particular version looks like it would disappoint though.

Buttonlamp · 26/04/2016 22:07

I know what you mean MrsLettuce. It does a bit. I might check the returns policy and try it. Laska, thank you. Those dresses are lovely, but the style would not suit me, of either. Diana that is gorgeous and much better quality than in my link, but I can't find quite the right colour and they seem a bit more fifties. (Man, I am picky - sorry!)

I appreciate your input though, all of you. Thank you. I think you are all correct in your assessments but that I might just have to try it on and see. If I do, I'll let you know. Then we can a nod sagely and say, Buttonlamp, you should have listened! Wink

icapture thank you.

How about this: www.lindybop.co.uk/dresses-c1/tea-day-dresses-c2/juliet-navy-polka-dot-tea-dress-p143

Except I don't want polka dot, though it is pretty. In all honesty, I want something a bit 'Peggy Carter'.

I've got that exact same dress and it really isn't anything like it looks online. It is a very stiff strange sort of material and it doesn't fit very well. I did get it slightly too big. If you like I can send you a picture of me wearing mine so you can see

Buttonlamp · 26/04/2016 22:23

Oh bother. Guess what I just bought, ChubbyPolecat?

I know, right?

I looked at the material close up - magnified image, I mean - and it did look thick, rather than draping. I promise to tell you all how dreadful, meh or lovely it looks.

What's your budget Buttonlamp? This is what the original dress is trying to be but it's pricey.

ChubbyPolecat · 26/04/2016 22:28

If you're tall and you've bought the right size it will probably look ok, I'm 5"3 and it's a weird length and the one I bought was a bit too big

MrsLettuce · 26/04/2016 22:29

x post.Do!

Buttonlamp · 26/04/2016 22:44

Oh, MrsLettuce, that is pretty...but way over budget. Nice to look at though.

ChubbyPolecat, to add to my chagrin, I am 5'2 and a half. Not so much Peggy Carter as Ant Man in drag. I want the dress to arrive quickly, just for the combined horror and entertainment of seeing myself in it.

ChubbyPolecat · 27/04/2016 13:08

I'm sure it'll be lovely! Just because I don't like mine doesn't mean you won't like yours!

Buttonlamp · 28/04/2016 22:33

So, the dress arrived. (I know, that was quick!) I tried it on and my boobs look lost in it. The reviews say a size 12 equates to an L. I beg to differ. I'll be sending it back. Time to try again!

OP posts:
ChubbyPolecat · 28/04/2016 22:37

Oh sounds the same as mine then! That's a shame

MrsLettuce · 28/04/2016 23:06

That's annoying. Would a smaller size work or is it a lost cause?

MrsLettuce · 03/05/2016 21:07

Just came across this (also this version & this version & this version) when I was looking for something else. Could come up pretty 40's very easily, none are blue though. Any use?

tellyjots · 03/05/2016 21:19

Have you heard of Totty Rocks? They have some stunning 40's style dresses.

Buttonlamp · 07/05/2016 23:49

Ooh no. Thanks. I'm trying the next size down, when it arrives. I also picked up a blue floral number in a charity shop, as back up.
