jacket to wear with jeans? any suggestions please?

At work I tend to wear dresses & a jacket (easiest option as I'm not a keen shopper). I live in jeans when I'm not working, mostly with a hoodie or jumper & Rab type jacket.
It is really time for me to smarten up occasionally. I have lots of shirts and thin jumpers that I'd love to wear with a jacket....but what jacket?
I'm 5'7", size 10-12, 40 years old and in reasonable shape.
I feel that bomber jackets are too much of an 80s throwback for me, not sure about bikers. I'm thinking about a reasonably neutral colour to go with as much of my existing clothes as possible.
Any pointers at things to look at would be hugely appreciated.

Thank everyone, so many great suggestions.
Sadly i find it hard to find the time to go to charity shops due to living in the sticks, my SIL always finds amazing clothes in them and looks fab.
I'm off to look at the links in detail, thanks for the assistance.
