Revelation: silicone in hair products is the work of the devil!

Used Dove volumising shampoo the other day as I'd run out of my usual expensive siliconey shampoo - thinking that my hair would turn into a frizz bomb. It dried so easily and smoothly. Thought it must be a fluke but since experimenting and combining with a non-silicone (cheapy) conditioner, my curly frizz bomb has been transformed into a sleek, but thick swishy delight. (no hair products either, just a little glycerine before drying). Can't believe the amount of money I've spent on products which have actually been making my hair worse!!Shock

Great, will give it a go thanks Smile

FrustratedFrugal · 17/04/2016 14:26

Wella has done supermarket lines that are much less costly - I'm a huge fan. Unfortunately they have discontinued their cheapest line, Pro Series.

RobberBride · 21/04/2016 22:56

Boobashka thank you, my hair is now all light and swishy

doesthatmakesense · 22/04/2016 11:37

Silicone, dimethicone etc is grim stuff.

Switched to silicone free everything a while ago after i got peri-oral dermatitis (bastard hybrid of acne/ezcema). Can be hard to find stuff that doesn't have synthetic parfum etc as well as no 'cones. A lot of the hippy brands like Weleda, Jason, dr hauschka do things but they don't all do hair products. Avalon shampoos are fab, only on sale in waitrose locally. Am currently enjoying a Neal's Yard one - geranium i think.

SistersOfPercy · 22/04/2016 16:17

DD washed her hair with Lush Rock Star soap last week, she thought I'd bought a new lush shampoo bar the daft sod.
The laugh was seemingly on me as it left her hair beautifully soft and shiny with no frizz.

I tend to swap brands every few months. Probably my imagination but seems to loose effectiveness over time.
I do rather love Lush's 'New' Shampoo bar and the Jungle conditioner bar though.

Orwellschild · 22/04/2016 16:49

The Garnier Ultimate Collections Royal jelly shampoo has made my (30 ish!) hair stronger and LONGER than it's ever been..in my life. The stuff is amazing!! And less than 4 quid for shampoo & conditioner! I promise I don't work for them!!

RatherBeRiding · 22/04/2016 17:25

www.faithinnature.co.uk/products/aloe-vera-shampoo

I'm hooked on this stuff (started using at it's completely non-tested on animals) - wasn't expecting it to be wonderful, but by golly it is! Hair never been so soft, sleek & shiny.

FluffyBunny1234 · 22/04/2016 17:41

Silicone free turned my hair into a horrible tangled mess & took sometime to come back from it Sad I was hoping it was going to be a miracle for me Grin
Anyway now I just buy whatever's on offer Blush and that has led me to find the worst ever shampoo/conditioner EVER.... L'oreal Clay . It's leaves a nasty residue on it, yuk, hate

Mrsleighdelamare · 22/04/2016 17:44

Silicone makes my neck all spotty (where my hair touches my skin). Nasty stuff.

JoshLymanIsHotterThanSam · 22/04/2016 17:44

I am only recently silicone free and am very pleased with my hair since. I co-wash with a shampoo wash once a week.
I use Yes To Blueberries (found in boots).

I have been using it for my smalls too and thier hair is notably better too.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 22/04/2016 17:52

I am silicone and sodium laureth sulphate free. My hair has never looked better!

Also using the hair gel that's 25p from tesco - this is my hair washed today. Lovely fat shiny curls!

"I use Australian organics conditioner and amie daily moisturiser"

I use Amie moisturiser too (the Morning Light one). It's really nice, cheap, suitable for vegans and not tested on animals. So pleased I found it. Waitrose sell it too.

If people can look beyond thinking it's for hippies only then Faith in Nature shampoos are silicone free and rather nice. I've discovered it pays to look beyond the high street shops for beauty products. Just noticed a pp has also mentioned them.

VestalVirgin · 22/04/2016 18:00

If you used silicone for a long time, your hair will need to recover from it. One is also advised to use a special shampoo to get the silicone residue out, first. (Cannot remember how this works, exactly, but if you google how to grow your hair long, you will find the forums that got me to quit silicone)

For me, switching to silicone free worked flawlessly, without any silicone removal shampoo but my hair is rather tame, anyway.

PegsPigs · 22/04/2016 18:05

So does anyone know why silicone suits some hair and not others?

gerbo · 22/04/2016 18:12

I am experimenting right now with Body Shop Rainforest moisturising shampoo and conditioner, silicone free, having used Aussie Moist for years. It's working really well, I think less frizzy, feels soft and curls seem to like it. Didn't use special silicone remover first, and no problems. (Thick, curly hair.)

Has anyone tried the Aveda range? I'm tempted but they're very expensive. Silicone free and organic. Any reviews???

FourOnTheHill · 22/04/2016 18:20

Green people shampoo and conditioner are silicone and lots of other things free and they are the best I've found

RainbowDashian · 22/04/2016 18:24

I have long completely straight fine hair and find that silicone conditioners weigh it down and make it look dull. Sls makes my scalp itchy and flakey. I love faith in nature and have been using their shampoo and conditioners for about 5yrs I think.
I also really like the body shop rain forest shine stuff aswell.
When I go to the hairdresser every two years she always comments on how good condition my hair is.
I wish sls/silicone free products were more widely available in supermarkets.

Lucepow · 22/04/2016 18:34

I've recently started using a shampoo and conditioner free from Sulphates, silicone, Parabens and phthalate. I love it and my hair is super soft and shiny, so much better than anything else I've used! The one I've bought is called reviive, and it's also organic which is amazing.

I have sorta curly hair. Depends on the shampoo I use as to how curly it is! brushing my hair before I wash it, Lush 'Big' shampoo and letting it air dry I get fab curls. If I brush it after I wash it it goes sort of wavy but mostly flat and limp.

Anything with heavy conditioning If I want my hair to be sleek (It kills my curls/waves)

I tired Lush avocado co-wash ( It smells like sherbet lemons!) and that leaves my hair really lovely and soft.

I very rarely use anything else these days because I get nasty, itchy dandruff and large spots on my scalp with regular shampoos. I've ditched conditioner years ago and I went about 2 mths without using shampoo on my hair and it really improved my itchy sore scalp. I do regular 'no shampoo' weeks. Just washing it with lots of warm water.

SoupDragon · 22/04/2016 18:43

I've been dyeing it myself with Olia for a while

I found Olia made my (fine, straight!) hair horrid. GArnier Nutrisse leaves it really nice though.

ShapeBandit77 · 22/04/2016 18:44

Gerb, there Be Curly range is to die for. Paid £44 for shampoo and hair masque. Was wonderful but really can't justify the cost. Bought by accident as got recommended by lovely shop assistant and I didn't check price. I nearly choked when the cashier said amounthat but felt compelled to continue with sale. Crazy I know. Blush

228agreenend · 22/04/2016 18:48

I like the Everpure range also (listed still in Boots website).

FourOnTheHill · 22/04/2016 18:54

Nearlyovertherainbow how long did you try for? It will get worse for a bit as silicone free is often also SLS free, and without the SLS, the built up silicone doesn't wash out, and it all gets a bit lank and heavy for a while until the silicone is properly gone. SLS irritates my scalp like mad, so that is actually my reason for going silicone free.

Bumpasaurusmumma · 22/04/2016 19:41

Happy hair days sold by Sainsburys has a whole range of silicone, paraben and other nasties free shampoo and conditioners. They smell amazing and I've yet to find one that I haven't liked!

Behooven · 22/04/2016 19:53

Agree with the Everpure posts - Superdrug have it
