Revelation: silicone in hair products is the work of the devil!

Used Dove volumising shampoo the other day as I'd run out of my usual expensive siliconey shampoo - thinking that my hair would turn into a frizz bomb. It dried so easily and smoothly. Thought it must be a fluke but since experimenting and combining with a non-silicone (cheapy) conditioner, my curly frizz bomb has been transformed into a sleek, but thick swishy delight. (no hair products either, just a little glycerine before drying). Can't believe the amount of money I've spent on products which have actually been making my hair worse!!Shock

I've been ordering samples from British Curlies. The Trepadora Quinoa conditioner is expensive, but the best my hair felt in ages. I'm trying another sample of that to be sure before ordering a big bottle, but I think I may end up going with that. My hair is also somewhere between wavy and curly.

Been trying Shea Moisture too, because it's gotten such good reviews. The Yucca and Baobab line is pretty decent. Going to try the Raw Shea next. I've also had good results with L'Oreal's Ever Sleek and Ever Riche lines (but not as good results with Ever Pure).

And yes, ditching sulfates and silicones has done great things for my hair. :) I went back to sulfates for a while this winter, because we were short on money, and it was easier to pick up Herbal Essences for £3. That was a mistake.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 15/04/2016 13:41

My hairdresser charges £10 on top of whatever you get done normally for an Olaplex treatment 😳

I find it so hard to get my head around decent shampoos, silicone free? Sulphate free? Paraben free? Sls free? I can't work it all out!

nearlyovertherainbow · 15/04/2016 14:23

I should have pointed out I bought a stage 3 olaplex treatment for £30 and had a cut, reshape etc, so I think the Olaplex itself was around £20-£30. Obviously not as cheap as yours Ginger Envy but I guess still a rip off considering I can't tell a difference!

I never know what bloody shampoo to use as my hair seems to change from one wash to the next. In the last ten days I have had dry frizz then luscious curls from the same products using the same shower, so it's not a difference in water. Today it's back to tinder dry.

Have had hairdressers tell me silicone damages hair and cheap shampoos are rubbish. Saw Liz Earl on Telly saying products with SLS dry your hair, yet I'm currently using one with SLS and still get glossy shiny locks, alternating with the kind of stuff Bear Grylls pulls off trees for tinder Hmm

I may try Bank's recommendation.

EarSlaps · 15/04/2016 17:47

I try to use minimal silicone in my hair and that seems to work well. I use the Organix Kakui (?) oil shampoo and conditioner, or L'Oreal EverRiche. I think the Organix range have a tiny bit of silicone in, but no SLS. Every month or so I wash with a shampoo with SLS to strip it of any build up. Seems to be a good balance for me.

I also had straw hair from dyeing it so now I use henna and indigo. My hair is getting better.

BankWadger · 15/04/2016 20:59

Adora my hair changes depending on humidity levels. It looks it's best in Summer - warm and dampish, perfect fat curls. Sadly as I'm in Scotland I mostly have the afore mentioned bonkers can't make it's mind up mess, as it's so bleeding cold most of the time.

NutellaLawson · 15/04/2016 21:12

Remember that the swishiness of hair can be down to other things than just shampoo.

A humid day makes my hair frizz. If I wash my hair and air dry it on a crisp day (low humidity) it's lovely and swishy even on the same shampoo.

Also, if my hair was pretty greasy before I washed it, it again feels nicer. A pre wash oil treatment I suppose.

Weirdly silicones in serums make my hair frizztastic (the next day, after a wash) but silicones in conditioner seem ok. Changing to cone free conditioners made no difference or made hair worse.

However I do now use a hair mask between the shampoo and conditioner every other wash or so. I like vatika protein one and it's fixed my frizz (for now at least).

Greengardenpixie · 15/04/2016 21:43

My hair also looked a mess when i went silicone free. Went back to pantene. Fabulous!!! The best ever thing for my hair has been to dye it with henna sorry whole other thread But OMG its the shiniest most beautiful hair i have EVER had and i can't believe it is my hair. Seriously!

SirChenjin · 15/04/2016 21:46

Silicone's all the way for me. I've also recently discovered coconut oil - a tiny bit through wet hair before I dry it (with my Babyliss Big Hair mwah mwah mwah) and it's all looking pretty good, even if I do say so myself.

BankWadger · 15/04/2016 22:18

Coconut oil just made my hair a weird sticky grease slick. I'll stick to using it in cakes in place of butter!

piddleypower · 15/04/2016 22:39

Mine is sooooo much better now I have gone silicone free. Smooth, glossy and soft. Definitely going to stick with it. I wish more shampoos would say if they are silicone free. Been using the Moroccan oil one from holland and Barrett, and Argan oil. Amazing for my frizz prone, dry, knackered hair.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/04/2016 00:58

My hair is dreadful of I go SLS and silicone free I've tried a couple of times last time was 3months and my hair looked dreadful!

I'm lovely and swishy again nowGrin

SirChenjin · 16/04/2016 08:43

Bank - you only need a miniscule amount. I have had the greasy mop effect but kept reducing the amount to next to nothing and now have swishy hair. Everyone's different though - probably why there are so many hair products out there Smile

RobberBride · 16/04/2016 14:07

OP do you mean this shampoo? www.boots.com/en/Dove-Advanced-Hair-Series-Oxygen-Moisture-Shampoo-250ml_1498709/

StormyBlue · 16/04/2016 14:12

My natural hair is quite wavy/bushy/sticks out at odd angles and when I tried cone free it made it even worse, I looked like a wildling out of Game of Thrones. I stuck at it for a while, but now I just use normal conditioner.

boobashka · 16/04/2016 17:17

Hi Robber - yes that's the one!
Hope it works for you..

Boobashka thanks!

Shenanagins · 16/04/2016 18:38

I was using l'oreal everpure shampoo which is sulphate free and my hair looks amazing with it but it seems to have disappeared from the supermarkets now - hope it's not discontinued Shock.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 16/04/2016 19:59

Sir- do you blow dry after? I suppose it's only like using hair oils, isn't it? I'll give it a goSmile

TentUpFirstBunkUpLater · 16/04/2016 20:08

I use this

Fab Shampoo

It is the bollocks

TheDowagerCuntess · 16/04/2016 21:32

Is that Wella shampoo seriously £24.95?

SirChenjin · 17/04/2016 09:22

Same - yes, blow dry after. I heat the hard coconut oil by holding the hair dryer over the jar until a little bit melt, put a tiny tiny bit on my fingers and then work through my hair avoiding the roots. Spray with heat defence spray, blast with hair dryer until almost dry and finish off with the babyliss big hair - swishy hair!

SirChenjin · 17/04/2016 09:23

Dame even Smile

burnishedsilver · 17/04/2016 09:48

Jane, trying using a different dye. I changed salons and switched from a loreal colour to a wella colour. All the frizz and static are gone.

JaneJeffer · 17/04/2016 09:55

You may be right burnished. I used to go to a salon that used Wella but they got too expensive. I've been dyeing it myself with Olia for a while. Time to go to a professional I think!
