Black tie/cocktail dress

LadyWithLapdog · 13/04/2016 23:14

I'm looking for a black tie/cocktail dress. I'm a size 14 and tall, so no big flowery patterns. Any suggestions? Thank you. Up to £100 or so.

The Coast website has lots of lovely dresses to choose from.

Something like this or is lace over now? Does it have to be maxi long?

I'll have a look at Coast as well, thanks.

Sorry keep trying to link and my iPads playing silly buggers...

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 13/04/2016 23:41

Saw some nice ones on Zalando when I was looking for DD recently.

whattodoforthebest2 · 13/04/2016 23:44

Yes I think the last one you linked isn't dressy enough.

whattodoforthebest2 · 13/04/2016 23:48

I've seen the Lori Lee dresses from Coast much cheaper on eBay if they're any good 😊

LadyWithLapdog · 14/04/2016 00:05

Thank you! Those Coast ones are gorgeous. I particularly like the red one. I won't have time for eBay due to work but I'll have a look on the full Coast website and there's a big shopping centre I can go to at the weekend.

Having gone through 700 dresses online this evening, I've concluded I'm too mean & too fussy.

I'll go and look at that asymmetrical one again, it's s nice, simple cut. Thanks.

Thank you, those are quite timeless designs and I'd get a lot of wear out of them.

What about jade velvet

Or
black lace long

Or
red lace long

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 15/04/2016 09:29

Jaeger are my "go to" for good fabrics and good sale prices. It's not always the most exciting stuff but as you say, it's timeless and usually a forgiving cut.

Match.com often has bargains too particularly in the larger sizes. I think most of their customers are in the 8-10 bracket.

whattodoforthebest2 · 15/04/2016 14:15

I think you mean matchesfashion.com, Tread - match.com is a dating website Grin - mind you I expect they have all shapes and sizes too!

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 15/04/2016 14:23

I recently hired a dress for a black tie event from Dream Wardrobe. You can pick two sizes, they deliver to you a day or two beforehand and provide a labelled Jiffy bag to return them after wear, you don't have to dry clean or anything.
I reasoned I wouldn't be likely to wear proper evening dress more than once as invitations of that type are infrequent and if not want to wear the same dress twice.
Cost about £60 and I got a Badgley Mischka dress that drew loads of compliments.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 15/04/2016 14:27

Oops , Yes !!! Grin Blush

LadyWithLapdog · 15/04/2016 22:52

Thank you for further examples. I can't see myself with a lacy back :) I hadn't thought of hiring, which is strange as that's what my DH is doing. Off to look at that. I have some time this weekend for a few shops as well.
