Is it just me or are Converse cripplingly painful?

I literally cannot walk anywhere in Converse without getting foot pain due to hard sole and no arch support. They also rub heels and toes. Is it just me?! I have no problems with any other shoes - my feet are not an awkward shape or size. Are Superga any better for comfort?

I love my converse - I do usually buy the men's sizes though as they are wider and more comfortable! I forgot how much they rub when they are new though Sad

mumsnit · 04/04/2016 16:30

I discovered the Dunlop ones from Sports Direct - for just a tenner!! For me they are much more comfortable than either Converse or Superga and just a better fit all round.
I personally found Superga even more uncomfortable than Converse as the soles are quite hard and heavy - no give in them. I do think it depends on your feet though as I do have wide, flat feet Blush

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2016 16:39

I like Converse but the leather ones are deffo more comfortable than the canvas ones. I find them fine for day to day stuff, but on a city break etc where I'd walk for miles and miles, they are too flat.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2016 16:40

Hate those Sketchers things - would rather be uncomfortable, frankly.

knowler · 04/04/2016 16:42

Oh no Remus, you are totally wrong on Skechers :) Yes, they are hideous but they are like walking on air. Try a pair and you'll be a convert Grin

I couldn't bring myself to wear Skechers.

'No thanks, I'll be fine with my shoes made of broken glass and barbed wire. They're not that uncomfortable really'

TrixieBernadette · 04/04/2016 16:46

I used to love sketchers.

Then they put that shitty memory foam sole in every pair.

And my knees are buggered if I try.

So no more sketchers for me :-(

knowler · 04/04/2016 16:46

I know, I know - Skechers are a slippery slope. I'll be browsing the Hotter website soon Wink

I did try a pair on, after reading hundreds of raving reviews on here. Too wide, too heavy. Like walking on giant polystyrene trays.

Buttwing · 04/04/2016 16:50

Oh god no not sketchers they are horrific!

I find converse comfy. Someone told me or may even have heard it on here that when you get a pair of converse you should remove the laces put the shoe on then lace it with your foot in it. It's works for me. It doesn't help with the arch support thing though.

"would rather be uncomfortable, frankly."

Really? I hate having sore, uncomfortable feet. I cannot understand people who would rather hobble about in shoes that aren't comfortable. When we went to Rome we walked for miles. I couldn't have done that in Converse.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 04/04/2016 17:00

Skechers all the way. Converse are like you haven't got any shoes on - in a bad way 😟

Skechers are like walking on clouds made of marshmallow.

Duckfacepalm · 04/04/2016 17:03

Good for me, although I am an awkward between size so size up generally. You might be prone to plantar fasciitis. I don't wear Converse for long distance walking as I ended up with it last year. I do at least 5-8 miles a day (with dogs) not risking plimsol type shoes for that now. Still love Converse & Vans for normal activity. I do currently have some Go walks! middle aged sigh tho I've worn them 24 times and they've nearly worn out, YES that is a bit thorough I am timing their demise under 200 miles and nearly gone! 'Go Walk' just not very far… I do find Vans have more padding to the sole. I get away with wearing Converse as shoes though anything more trainer like and I would feel a bit mutton for most of the places I wear converse to. :)

squoosh · 04/04/2016 17:03

Like walking on clouds of sartorial shame more like.

knowler · 04/04/2016 17:05

I'm with you NickName - I cannot abide uncomfy shoes and just can't seem to ignore the pain. Uncomfy shoe-pain is in another league.

I'm off to skechers.co.uk Grin

My converse are my outdoor slippers!

imip · 04/04/2016 17:06

In my youth, I lived in converse. Now as a almost-45-year old, I just couldn't do it, I'd be crippled in pain.

But, I still want to look reasonably stylish and I live in trainer-type shoes as a sahm that does a lot of walking. About 12 months ago, I got a pair of Nike lunarglides. I really recommending them. Like walking on air. I need a stability trainer, and these are really comfortable and look good too!

knowler · 04/04/2016 17:07

DuckFace you are very perceptive as I am currently suffering really bad plantar fasciitis. I think starting to run has brought this bout on, but weirdly running in my Asics trainers is one of the occasions when I don't have any pain at all. I could not force myself into Converse at the minute without being in real agony.

RalphSteadmansEye · 04/04/2016 17:08

I think Converse are really comfy in terms of fit, comfort around the top of the foot and sides etc (I do have very thin feet), but the soles - just no! I can feel every stone and cobble. They feel like they're really bad for your posture etc if you have a high arch.

I only wear mine with a certain pair of jeans that look daft with every other pair of shoes or boots I own, and only for a quick nip around town - not for walking miles.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2016 17:09

I have Nikes for city-break type walking. Beautifully comfortable.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 04/04/2016 17:09

Squoosh. Nuh uh. Nope.

Besides, walking confidently and bouncily with a smile on ones face is infinitely more attractive than the pained, hopshuffle and grimace of someone in uncomfortable shoes 😌

squoosh · 04/04/2016 17:10

Because Skechers is the only comfortable shoe option out there? Uh, okay then!

squoosh · 04/04/2016 17:12

I've never hobbled in my life (aside when I tried Converse) but it will be a cold day in hell before a shoe called Skecher ever gets to be on intimate terms with my foot.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/04/2016 17:13

Squoosh Grin

Sanchar · 04/04/2016 17:13

I have narrow feet. My feet are so narrow my parents paid eye watering amounts to have my shoes specially made as a child.

So, even I find converse incredibly painful to wear, mostly over the toes. And they are shite quality, mine started coming apart after a month.

Now I wear my muck boots in the winter and flip-flops in summer, I own no other shoes anymore. ( ignores unbroken in DMs under the stairs)
