White tie dress- help!

RosieLig · 20/03/2016 22:59

I need a very formal dress for a white tie event.

I am a size 10, 5 foot 7, in my early 40s. Arms are OK, boobs OK, more of a rectangle than hourglass. I'm a bit conscious of my tummy.

Dark hair and eyes so I suit brights and navy. Any ideas? Thanks:-)

To narrow it down a bit:

Do you have a budget (number of digits, even!)?

Would you wear something off-the shoulder or strapless?

Do you want a full skirt or a sleeker silhouette?

Kr1stina · 21/03/2016 07:03

How long before your event ? If it's quite a few weeks you have enough time to order from Light in the Box, who do gorgeous formal gowns at very good prices . But you MUST follow their size instructions

WellErrr · 21/03/2016 07:05

You shouldn't have bare shoulders for white tie, and it must be floor length which narrows it down a bit

Hi

Thanks. No to strapless, I'll check out that site thanks.

Max £300.

Thanks!

And don't forget proper long satin evening gloves!

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/03/2016 07:27

Do you like this sort of silhouette? A dress from john Lewis which is well under budget

They have quite a lot of possibles, if you search 'black tie maxi' on their website

BigGreenOlives · 21/03/2016 07:31

Gorgeouscouture.com have lots of dresses, around £200.

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/03/2016 07:33

Or this, with a slightly more swishy skirt?

WellErrr · 21/03/2016 07:40

That last one is beautiful Glacinda.

Embellished silk: www.vestiairecollective.com/women-clothing/dresses/notte-by-marchesa/blue-embellished-silk-chiffon-gown-notte-by-marchesa-1919442.shtml

Though I'm not sure about shipping, since o think that one's from the us.

Or this silk chiffon from Nordstrom:

m.shop.nordstrom.com/s/amsale-convertible-crinkled-silk-chiffon-gown/3668953?cm_ven=Linkshare&cm_cat=partner&cm_pla=10&cm_ite=1&siteId=J84DHJLQkR4-WMZOq2BPIX74XNb5eBZrxA

Nordstrom have a few lovely dresses, actually, but many are polyester, which you might not think suitable.

Ghost do some beautiful simple and elegant dresses, John Lewis normally has a few to try (you generally have to order the style and colour). My dd has a beautiful cream bias cut dress , bought for a white tie ball . Around the £200 mark . Really stunning dresses .

RosieLig · 21/03/2016 18:44

Thank you all, some gorgeous dresses there. x

Get one of the plum coloured ones from Gorgeous Couture. Fab with dark hair.

If you have up to £300 to spend I would recommend finding a boutique store near you. Then you can be sure no one else will have the same frock. I go to a gala dinner once a year and usually buy from a boutique place
