How should a 30 year old dress?

Ella2016xxxc · 16/03/2016 09:15

I'm 30 but told by my 18 year old sister I dress too young.
I look young myself and nobody believes I'm 30,normally they say your 21/22 surely( happy days)
I normally wear skinny jeans with a top,off shoulder jumper.
I like to tan and do my makeup.

I would pay absolutely no mind to your sister!

INeedNewShoes · 16/03/2016 09:19

Ignore, ignore, ignore!

Cheeky little so and so. You can have a ball reminding her of this when she turns 30 ;)

KnockMeDown · 16/03/2016 09:19

At 30, there is only one way in which you should be dressing - and that is - Exactly how you want!!! Grin

AliciaMayEmory · 16/03/2016 09:19

Exactly how they want to dress!

INeedNewShoes · 16/03/2016 09:20

FWIW, maybe I'm just mutton dressed as lamb too.

I'm in my thirties and mostly wear long-sleeved tops and short skirts with dark tights in winter. And, shock-horror, I have chubby legs!

Ella2016xxxc · 16/03/2016 09:28

I also love short high waisted skirts with tights in winter too with polo necks or long sleeve tops.

Once you turn 30, you need to turn away from colour - greys and browns are your friends, black and navy at a stretch.

Skirts have to be at mid-calf length. If trousers are worn (which should be the exception!), avoid all jeans. Make sure trousers have a neat front crease and an elasticated waist.

Blouses and collared shirts only, no t-shirts or (heaven forbid!) tank tops!!!
A high neckline is essential.

Pearls may be worn, or tasteful gold jewellery (NO rose gold, though!).

Keep your hair neat and your make-up simple; cold cream, powder, a little blush and some lipstick suffice.

Speak gently, never draw attention to yourself, and remain graceful at all times.

Did I forget anything? Grin

INeedNewShoes · 16/03/2016 09:38

Bright what about footwear? Can you let me know asap and I'll get myself straight down to the shops to get myself kitted out with a new wardrobe.

Knackeredknitter67 · 16/03/2016 09:38

Well I'm 40's and dress like you. So I would say you need to dress much younger

Now I know where I have been going wrong!

I think it depends on your figure. I'm a size 12 (usually) after kids and prefer longer tops/dresses which cover my bottom when wearing leggings or jeggings. Colour wise it really depends what suits you. I've seen young people look awful in short skirts or off the shoulder tops etc if they don't have the right figure do them. It's tricky because without a photo it's hard to say! 30 isn't old anyway (I'm 36)

brightnearly · 16/03/2016 09:44

Footwear? Something like this maybe. But this is already a bit on the daring side!

You're 30. You're not 300. I'm 40 and still dress modern, or unique is probably the better word.
Take no notice of your sister. She's only a baby though. I remember when I was young. Anyone ever 25 was decrepit, and should have been sitting in their rocking chair with their granny shawls. Grin.

Oooh those heels though! They seem tantalisingly high!

AdriftOnMemoryBliss · 16/03/2016 10:00

However the fuck they like!

Tell your sister to stop being a dick!

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 16/03/2016 10:11

Cheeky fucker, your sister! Does she dress the same way as you? Do you carry it off better?

Dress how you like!

(Mid forties and probably dress too young myself. Not so much jeans - as ! don't find they suit me - but high waisted short skirts, pinafore dresses, shorts, etc. Who cares?)

stiffstink · 16/03/2016 10:16

I would recommend Bon Marche for polyester blouses.

KillBillHill · 16/03/2016 10:20

I understand. I'm almost 33. You should be knitting your own jumpers by now.

ClaudiaApfelstrudel · 16/03/2016 10:24

"you're never too old" that's what my mum always said to me and so far she's been right.

BayLeaves · 16/03/2016 10:28

At 30 you should also be dressing appropriately for the weather conditions.

Something I saw on Twitter the other day:

20 Things Women Should Not Wear After the Age of 30:

1-20. The weight of other people's judgements and expectations.

Ella2016xxxc · 16/03/2016 10:48

Ha ha ha some of these replies have cracked me up.
Oh god I have just bought a pair of white Joni jeans from Topshop for the nicer weather...I'm going to be hung, drawn and quartered aren't I.
your only as young as you feel I say,

Doobigetta · 16/03/2016 14:48

The average 30 year old has more style and looks better than the average 18 year old, imo.

EssentialHummus · 16/03/2016 14:55

I was once told I was mutton dressed as lamb when I was 18. The offender was under 10, though Grin.

I'm 30 and my go-to outfit is dark blue jeans, Chelsea boots, v-neck top and a black leather jacket. I have some exciting scarves to zhoozh things up when needed. Not sure what your sis is on about tbh.
