How long should a long dress be?

Going to a ball and have bought a dress which is petit but still needs shortening. It's quite clingy but has a lining which goes as far as the knee. Stretchy fabric so can't machine the hem (although the manufacturer did but I haven't the confidence or time to get dressmaker to do it) so will take a chance with wonderweb. Should it be ankle length or longer so it covers my shoes?

If it's a full length gown if wear it to the floor .

Thanks for that.

I think it depends on the actual dress but I think if it's floor length then a hint of shoe is about right. As long as you're not tripping over it!

^^ that's what I meant . It wasn't supposed to be a sarky answer ! 😀

I think dresses look daft half mast on the ankle . In my opinion .

Make sure you pin it up while wearing the appropriate shoes! But also try going upstairs in shoes with it pinned up.
