Flaky skin around nose

I've always had oily skin, big pores, breakouts. I'm used to dealing with that. Recently though, I've had itchy, often sore, flaky skin around my nose. The area is quite red too. I've also just noticed I have dandruff for the first time in my life and wonder if there's a connection?

Any advice on managing this? Heavy moisturising seems to have zero effect. Makeup looks utterly dreadful. It's not something my incredibly busy gp would be happy for me to ask for help with and a private dermatologist is way out of my price range. I'd really like some advice on what to do to try and make the problem go away, and on how on earth to use make up to make it look less dreadful in the meantime!

For any dry skin problems I use No 7 dry skin rescue and it's great. No other moisturiser works for me

Sounds exactly like seborrhoeic dermatitis. Treat it gently for now and it'll probably go as soon as we get a bit more sunshine.

Using a muslin cloth to cleanse and tone. I always get flaky skin on my cheeks in winter and have just discovered this, it's amazing.

I use a moisturiser afterwards, but no matter what one I tried it didn't work on its own. It could be a sign that you need to drink more water too.

Could well be connected to your dandruff - I had similar patches around my nose and on my eyelids and ended up at the GP as no creams were helping. She said it looked like seborrheic dermatitis which is basically dandruff, although I haven't any on my scalp. Prescribed nizoral cream to be used twice a day and was told in the chemist that it is also available OTC so might be worth having a word with the pharmacist? Just over 2 weeks later mine is looking much clearer thank goodness!

I agree with seb dermatitis being a likely culprit. Get some nizoral shampoo, you can also use it on the area affected round the nose.

Nizoral is good stuff, you can also at a push and for short-term only use an athletes foot cream like Daktacort (antifungal + steroid). That's what was recommended for my dad and it did the trick pretty quickly I believe.

I have seb derm and atopic eczema, sounds like seb derm to me. I've never actually used anything topical for it on my face before, but I only get it there occasionally and mildly. Speaking to pharmacist sounds like a good idea. I have used a number of prescription shampoos before which do make a huge difference when I get a flare up on my scalp though. There are some that you can buy OTC so again the pharmacist can help with that too if the dandruff is bothering you. It's a pain but agree with pp that it tends to be worst in winter.
