Skin primer- What am I doing wrong?

Just that really.

Had a No7 matte skin primer for years, but have only just tried using it.

I really like my new foundation (YSL youth liberator) but the downside is, it doesn't last that long. Especially on my nose, so I got my primer out and it goes on fine, but when I then put my foundation over the top, it goes all blobby and my foundation doesn't go on well at all!

What am I doing wrong?

If it's years old it may need replacing. Also, it's a silicone based one and that can make it bobbly if you've put a little too much on, or if you are using a silicone heavy moisturiser underneath, or a silicone heavy foundation on top.

Ahhh, Nab, thanks. Hadn't thought I could be ODing on silicon. Very likely to be that. I was careful not to put too much on.

Maybe a patting motion would be better when applying my foundation?...

Really you should be able to apply with a brush or what have you, but I'm not sure. I don't use silicone primers, but surely make up artists must use a brush with them...? I am genuinely wondering. Maybe someone else will be able to help with application tips. Which foundation is it?

I use Olay Regenerist SPF 30 moisturiser and YSL youth liberator foundation. Just had a possible light bulb moment....could it be the SPF?

I wasn't sure which one of the moisturisers it was, but it looks like they all have silicone in, as does the foundation (looks like a really nice foundation, btw!), and maybe the SPF has it too?

It is a lovely foundation. As I said, it's not long lasting, but I prefer that than the drying effect the long lasting ones seem to have.

Would powder be better than a primer, to keep my foundation in place?

I find some of the primers just don't work well with some of the foundations. I am sure there is some technical reason why this is so (am sure I have seen Salli Hughes write about this but cannot remember the exact reasons). I have a couple of primers and now use them with specific foundations as otherwise I get the same bobbling issue.

are you giving the primer time to settle into the skin? 5 minutes minimum generally.

Applying too much foundation? You should be using a brush/damp sponge and applying downwards...not into the skin or in circles....

I've had this bobbling problem lately. I have found I need to make sure my moisturiser has entirely absorbed before I put on primer and then make sure that has absorbed(only use a tiny bit) before adding any further makeup. Read something about matching silcon based primer with silicon based foundation but not sure if that's correct or not!

Kel actually maybe not. I always give my serum and moisturiser enough time to sink in, but assumed that primer sat on the skin's surface anyway, so didn't really need to allow much time, if any, for it to sink in. Wrong?...
