Going from blonde to grey

I am not sure what to do with my hair.

I naturally have dark hair, but it has been steadily going grey since I was in my late 20's. Thanks to my Welsh genes.

Now I am 50, it is white and the front and slate grey at the back. I have it coloured and highlighted every month. As it comes through white at the front I overall colour is blonde. Though I am beginning to get fed up with dying it and feel a bit brassy blonde and am considering going naturally grey.

Has anyone done this after dying it for so long? Will it age me? Any hairdressers done this?

I did this last year. Got sick of dying it. Chopped it all off an now all naturally grey/salt/pepper with a fantastic white streak at the front. I love it tbh. Does it age me? I do not think so - but I am 44 so was never going to look 25 again anyway. I think I look wayyyy better though without the blorange dyed hair. Hair is better condition. No roots showing after 3 weeks.

My thread here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2316020-To-chop-or-not-Honest-opinions-please

Also a long running thread to have a look at. In it some have chopped like me, others are growing out, others are highlighting through the re-growth www.mumsnet.com/Talk/style_and_beauty/2423639-For-those-of-us-going-grey

I do not regret it for a minute. I wish I had done it a year ago.

Happy to answer any questions.

Thank you. I will read the threads.

I am so sick of worrying about roots all the time.

Did you just put up with the roots till it grew out or did your hairdresser put grey high lights through?

I'm halfway through growing my highlighted blonde out and letting my grey grow through. The difference in condition is quite startling! I did have a few darker 'slices' put through to help it all blend together a bit as it comes through. I say go for it -grey hair is nothing to be ashamed of and can look very striking.

I probably only had about 5 weeks growth (which by that point felt bad to me). I had as much length as the hairdresser dared chopped off and the colourist put in some fine grey highlights - but only on the already dyed hair - she left all the roots dye free. The grey highlights broke up the roots/non roots if you see what I mean.

I had to do it the pixie way - I knew that I would give in so easily if I had tried to grow out the dye.

I do not regret it for one moment. My hair colour suits me wayy better. And I too have much better conditioned hair - and my curls are coming back properly. Mostly it is the fact that I have less "bad hair days" in the year since I had the pixie than whilst I was dyeing. It would be a regular thing whilst dyeing - once/twice a month at least. Often down to worry about roots, or the condition of my fried hair. Since going grey - can barely think of any bad days - apart from maybe the day immediately afterwards when I had no idea how to style it.

You could ask the hairdresser to put a violet toner all over to kill any yellow in the blonde, and then maintain with a really good violet shampoo. The L'Oreal Professional one is great.

I went to my hairdresser a few weeks ago. She was excited when I said I wanted to let the grey grow. She cut a fair bit off the length, it is still below my shoulders. She has also put ash and silver highlights in, it is amazing. The colour is lighter, less yellow blonde and all the grey roots seem to have blended with it.

I am quite excited to see how it will look in another few weeks.
