A good ASH based hair dye.

My hair colour is like a lightish warm toned brown colour at the moment (which is coloured & had highlights prior to colouring).

I really want to change it to an ash tone, without it going darker. What's the best home dye to achieve this? I'm thinking it'll have to be a medium or dark blonde, as a brown would probably make it go too dark? Which brand are best for the ash tones? Thanks!

My hair has red tones. If I use anything other than Loreal Excellence, it turns ginger. Clairol for me is one of the worst.

You could try putting an ash toner on your hair but I don't know enough about them to advise.

I was about to say stick to Loreal. A hairdresser once told me that Clairol does golden tones (rather than ginger) and Loreal is ash.

Nice n Easy is Clairol. I'd stay well away.

Why? I always use Nice n Easy - it's the best I've tried for looking natural (usually natural medium brown, but sometimes the cool version).

Because the OP has said that her hair currently has golden tones in it. In my experience, Clairol hair dyes make warm tones warmer regardless of what it says on the box.

She can only try different brands but Loreal hair colours are very ash and that is what she said she wanted.

If it were me, I'd actually be going for an ash toner but I've never used them so can't comment.

Ash is ash. No company is going to make golden colours and call them ash...

The 'natural medium cool brown' shade is very definitely not golden. I can't speak for the lighter ones.

Thanks for the recommendations so far! I've tried both Loreal & Clairol dyes in the past but not the ash base ones so don't know I what they are like, I need a strong ashy one as when the sun shines (which, admittantly isn't very often!) on my hair it can look quite red/auburn & I'm in need of a change!

I'm currently growing out my permanent hair colour (to see how my grey really looks) and am using Nice'n Easy 8 wash Light Ash Brown (75), to calm down hide the ash blonde I wacked on a few weeks ago.
I think it's doing an ok job, no ginger or red tint in the sun - I just wish I'd not rushed the application as I still have grey patches thanks to having to sort out my 3 crying kids
