Help me look like this woman I saw in the street!

Trudging along in the rain the other day in flat boots, jeans, and sensible knee length waterproof school run type coat.

Then this woman hoved into view looking fabulous with her bob in a beany hat, egg shaped woolen coat, midi length flared skirt poking out of the bottom of it, woollen tights and ankle boots. She looked like she should be in focus at the front of a slow motion shot whilst the background blurred out and a Jacques Brel soundtrack played. Angry

She looked fab, everything was coordinated in terms of colour, she looked really cosy but actually fucking stylish, rather than me galumphing along.

So, I've decided enough with the jeans. I want to look feminine, chic, perhaps a little boho. Not like I've just raided the rails of White Stuff or Fat Face. I used to be so much braver with clothes but now I'm mid 40s, short and a bit fat, so this could be a challenge. I'm aware an egg coat would make me look like an actual egg. And I don't want to be the sort of middle aged woman who puts in pink highlights and wears zebra print DMs because they're "fun".

Any suggestions of where to get the type of clothes I'm on about? I don't mean necessarily copies of hers, it's more about being more original and somehow, oh I don't know, lovely.

Oasis. I really like their dresses Smile

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 30/01/2016 14:17

Liked this one too but it didn't really suit me

Lois I thought it was Oasis!

I've got the shirt dress but in a fern print and it's so versatile and comfy, love the striped one too.

My nearest Oasis is now an after work trip for me rather than lunch break in my old job, sob!

SwedishEdith · 30/01/2016 14:32

It has suggested the purple Kaliko coat that was linked earlier though Grin

Oh no! The game is up, I've been revealed as the brains behind the JL Style Edit!

I knew it Nonny - your in depth knowledge of East Enders sartorial style gave the game away Grin

SwedishEdith · 30/01/2016 14:42
Grin

My finger is getting a bit tired from having to press X so often. Think I made the mistake of saying I don't mind being a bit "adventurous". That means lace and fringes in JL land.

SSargassoSea · 30/01/2016 14:44

Someone mentioned Gudrun Sjoden on a thread not long ago - I've bought loads of tops, wish I'd known about it before. Not latest fashion but bright colours and comfortable.

SirChenjin · 30/01/2016 14:46

Grin Edith

I said non merci to the animal prints but wish I'd gone crazy. I suspect they'd have come up with something like this, more suited to the mature lady.

What a shame this is sold out in my size

I think I should have been more ruthless with brands I won't wear. Looking at you Jacques Vert (and you, Gina Bacconi, if I had known you existed).

SirChenjin · 30/01/2016 14:50

I bet she's really called Tina Bacon and she started off with a market stall

HeyNonnyMaybe · 30/01/2016 14:55

Arf at Tina Bacon. Grin

Grin
SwedishEdith · 30/01/2016 14:58

I just typed in 'Who is Gina Bacconi?' and got...no results!

HeyNonnyMaybe · 30/01/2016 15:01

You see, I'm sure there are lots of ladies who like that Edith even though it looks more like an amateur skin graft than an item of clothing.

Anyway, we've established that JL have gone a bit deranged with its weird Tinder meets Twinkle dress up doll software.

I feel a bit mean taking the piss out of specific things in case there are genuinely women out there who like that stuff.

I think, though, this gets to the heart of the difficulties we munters on this thread are having: we don't feel we want to embrace the soap star at the NTAs look, so we've found ourselves in Merrell coat and Fly boots meh-ness.

Meet Tina Bacon - who did appear in a search! I hope JL is paying her well in slops from their caff.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 30/01/2016 15:05

Hahahaha! Tina is rocking tan boots Grin

SirChenjin · 30/01/2016 15:07

And on that note I am off to tackle the ironing.

Totally agree with what you're saying Nonny. I feel there must be something between Kaff Beale, waterproof coats and sensible boots (and Mary Portas - who, for some reason, also seems to be held up as a style icon for the older lady)

SwedishEdith · 30/01/2016 15:08

Yes, that last one looks lovely on the model. And worn like that by someone who looks like that makes it look ok. It's just so un-me. But, I suppose that's the point - it's trying out stuff you'd never consider normally.

I did filter out pastels though and, towards the end, it started to suggest lots of white things - got exasperated, I think.

Feel a bit mean towards JL now. I guess the more people who use it, the better it gets at working out what people like.

SayAGreatBigThankyou · 30/01/2016 15:09

I feel like Tina and haven't even had a go on the JL doll yet.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 30/01/2016 15:09

It's not just JL, Next sent me the February catalogue supplement and its all horrible. Lots of 90's hyacinth bucket type stuff.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 30/01/2016 15:16

The colours and prints I mean. If your all heading over there for a full length floral skirt and matching jacket they've not gone that farGrin

HeyNonnyMaybe · 30/01/2016 15:22

Tina has my feet. Blush
