Is balayage still a thing?

I'm mid 30s and on maternity leave so have no restriction or influence on how I should look (work) and fancied a change
Hair is rich reddy chestnut brown with the odd gray starting which I pull out
Longish fringed Bob
Before I get it cut into usual choppy bob again what else might work? Is balayage passé?
I like contemporary simplicity think cos, whistles etc but at hm prices and school run uniform is skinnies in blue denim or black, with oversized white shirt , or chunky knit in grey etc with statement a cesseies, and felted trilby
Good bone structure but not skinny enough to carry off short hair which is love to be brave and try! Emma Willis girl crush
Open to suggestions

I love this a lot and have it at work too! V corporate but they don't seem to mind
Not too expensive to maintain either
I have v similar taste to you in clothes too
Go for it!

I think subtle balayage is still in but the obvious ones are passé

Balayage. My phone hates me and likes to make me look stupid.

An article that I read in the hairdressers last week said that ombre and balyage were out and had been replace by hair contouring and shimmering (I'm not even sure what that means).
