Please help me - feeling desperately ugly and need a makeover

I am in such a rut and desperately need some style advice. I want to completely make myself over and have no idea where to start. What I really need is someone non biased (with a good sense of style) to tell me what suits me. I have no idea especially with hair, makeup , clothes and glasses. If anyone thinks they could help I'll pm pictures - don't really want to post them here in case they end up in the daily fail under the heading 'ugly desperate mum turns to mn as last resort' or the like!!
As a rough idea, I'm 5ft4, 12st, medium build, shoulder length brown hair, very fine and limp - generally worn in a pony tail. Square face, strong jaw, highish cheek bones, quite large forehead, and what I think is a big nose and chin but been told not that bad.
I have asked friends and colleagues but they're all to non commital!!
Thank you

Thank you everyone, loads of ideas. Just have to try and find some time and money to spend on me!
Will try and take a picture in a bit to pm (better get dressed!)

I second going to Mac and getting a make over.

Also believe you should go with a bob, no fringe.
This will help your hair look thicker. It will take some looking after, ie washing every second day, but dry shampoo will help make your hair texture too.

Perfectly fitted underwear, even if it means going up a size - forget about the size on the label and go for fit and comfort. If the foundations are correct everything worn on top will look better.

Basic level of personal maintenance:
Eyebrows groomed and shaped, some make up daily to enhance eyes or lips.
Short, clean nails. My favourite nail colour is Chinchilly by Essie. It's a grey/mink colour.
Washed hair, left down or up in a chignon. Pony tails rarely look groomed.

The best shoes, coat, handbag you can afford. Even if you only have three pairs of footwear - flat shoes, heels and boots then make them the best quality. They last longer.

Make sure you wear colours near your face that enhance your natural colouring. I tend to wear white against my neck, or large crystal necklaces.

Make sure your neckline is appropriate to your body shape. So if you have large breasts, wear v- neck t-shirts or shirts.

Right, lots to get on with - make up counter, new underwear and practice a chignon!
