dress size - do you lie

Murphyslaw21 · 08/01/2016 09:33

The reason I'm asking is I am a 16 but always wear 18 as I like bigger clothes. B

My friends seem to be the same size as me but squeeze into a 14. Now just because you can do it up does this mean it fits.

I know one lady that wears size 12 tops and is clearly a 16

What size are you and what size clothes do you wear ?

I buy a size 14, or large and am confident telling people that fact. Mostly b:c they usually look a bit surprised. Even I find it a bit odd if I'm honest. Maybe I have reverse body dysmorphia and think I look a lot smaller than I actually do

SunnyL · 08/01/2016 14:35

My SIL has been lying to herself for years. She wears jeans that was waaaaaaay too tight. We're now at the stage where DH and I take bets on how many times we'll see her arse crack whenever we visit.

Toddlers and too tight jeans = arse crack perpetually on show

goodnessgraciousgoudaoriginal · 08/01/2016 14:44

I don't lie, but it's not something that tends to come up in conversation very often?

That said, I've had the same clothes for years (so obv same size - 10 in trousers, 8 in everything else), and sometimes they have been hanging off of me, and sometimes they have been tighter (but never skin tight - I can't bear anything that feels tight or restrictive).

I'm am however really worried that I won't be able to fit back into my trousers after my pregnancy. I don't think losing the weight will be an issue, but if my hips stay wider then I am totally fucked, as my hips were always the widest point of me anyway.

madmotherof2 · 08/01/2016 14:53

No I don't, hate talking about my clothes size!!

jamtartandcustard · 08/01/2016 15:57

Pre-preg I was a 14 and would wear a 14 except for undies where I would size up to a 16 for comfort. I would also buy 16 if I wanted a looser look. I'm happy in my body though so never felt the need to lie about it

christinarossetti · 08/01/2016 17:45

I don't 'lie' but I have no idea what my actual 'size' is because sizing is so random and varies each year.

I have clothes in my wardrobe varying from a Medium (Zara) to size 0 (Avoco).

VegetablEsoup · 08/01/2016 17:49

I'm size 12 but often wear 14 because I'm tall and 12 often is too short for me.
also allows for washing related shrinkage

SugarDiabetes · 08/01/2016 17:53

Today I've worn a size 14 pair of knickers and a size 8 pair of jeans. Usually I'm a 10-12 depending on the fit or brand.

What a bloody nonsense sizing is. I wish they'd scrap it and do proper measurements.

Knackeredknitter67 · 08/01/2016 18:45

I'm anything from a size 8 to a size 12. I do sometimes buy sweaters in a size 14, often just because the sleeves are longer. What does it matter?

toffeeboffin · 08/01/2016 19:44

I'm a 10 and usually wear a 10. But due to the variety in sizing I can wear anything between an 8 and an 18.

In fact, I don't really know what size I am Confused

I do lie about my height though - I say I'm 5'5, but really I'm 5'4 Grin

ouryve · 08/01/2016 19:51

I wear whatever fits, from whatever shop I get it from. That tends to be a 14, though sometimes I need a 16 for boobs (though they tend to be too big around the shoulder & neck and gape a lot if I'm not careful about style) and sometimes (but less often, recently) I'm fine with a 12.

What's the point of lying? Seems stupid to me.

friedafilmer · 09/01/2016 06:00

I bought the same dress from ASOS in two colours, both size UK14. The gray one is perfect, the black one is tight.

I don't know what size I am exactly but based on a clothing brand's size guide when I was 8kg lighter, my top was a size 14, waist 16, and hips 10-12. lol.

I have the weirdest body shape in the world.

Higge · 09/01/2016 06:47

Clothes size is a funny business - even when I lost weight I rarely believed I could fit into a size 8 - but I did and it took me a while to accept it. Still thought I was chunky! Now I'm a vanity 12, occasional 14....mostly though I won't buy a 14, I'd rather something was on the tight side because I have been trying to lose weight without dieting for a few months and it doesn't seem to be working. Wink

TheCatsMeow · 09/01/2016 08:04

I don't lie. I'm an 8/10, although I have some 6s and 12s in really weird sized things.

I actually feel nervous buying size 8s because I think I'm not that small but they fit so -shrug-

flowery · 09/01/2016 08:10

I can't remember the last time someone asked me my dress size. Why would they?! That's both nosey and boring as a conversation topic.

If they did I wouldn't lie, because what would be the point?

Eastpoint · 09/01/2016 08:11

I'm a 10/12. I have a few things which say they are size 8 and a few things which are a large. I try on size 12 dresses & size 28 jeans first and work from there. People lying about their weight & height amuses me, do you really think I'm going to think you're 5'7" when you're shorter than me & I'm 5'6"?

ghostspirit · 09/01/2016 08:17

im sure sizes have change from back in the day. 80s/90s my waist used to be a 24inch and that was a size ten but now i think its a size 8 :/ wich my waist was still 24inch its more like 1004 now..

oh and why so many hipster jeans pisses me off does not work for my big butt... i dont lie about size no point

flanjabelle · 09/01/2016 08:28

An ex friend, who is an ex friend because of her lies in general tells everyone she is a size 12 and weighs 10 stone. It is clearly a lie. she is at least a tight size 16 and must weigh close to 14 stone. It's ridiculous really, everyone must know she is lying.

I'm a size 8 in most shops, size 10 in some and I lie to my mum. She thinks I'm too thin. I'm not I'm a perfect bmi. I tell her I weigh more than I do and that I'm a size 10 as apparently an 8 is too thin. Hmm

Eastpoint · 09/01/2016 08:31

Dress size measurements have changed, a 10 used to be 34 24 34. Now there is outrage about adult women having slim waists, my mother's waist was 26 when I was 9 and she was 36, had had 2 children and was 5'9". She was a fit model for a wholesaler in her early 20s and used to get really annoyed about irregular sizing.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 09/01/2016 08:38

I'm an 8 - 10. I wear 8 - 10. If people ask (which they generally don't), I tell them I'm an 8 - 10. When I was a 16, & when I was a 6, I generally didn't tell people as I'd get negative comments (although I didn't lie, I just didn't reply). People tend to be judgmental if they feel someone is outside the range of what they feel is acceptable. FWIW, I'm 5'3" so a size 16 puts me into the very overweight category. A size 8 is about right for me in terms of BMI.

Lurkedforever1 · 09/01/2016 08:52

I know what you mean op, and know a few people like that. I find it quite sad really, cos it's really unflattering. Know a few who are so deluded they think everyone else is lying. 'Oh no, you can't possibly be x size cos I'm a size y, and bigger/ smaller than you'

bishboschone · 09/01/2016 18:07

I actually don't know what size I am . I'm short and have a small rib cage , quite big boobs and a small waist but a round bum and big thighs . I can get into some size 8 jeans but mostly 10. The reason why I buy them smaller is jeans always stretch and it drives me crazy . I always buy the smallest jeans I can get on and they look ok . Some shops I can be an 8 or 10.. I actually don't think size 10 is a teeny size . I need to lose weight !!
