Hi,

I am in my thirties and never work lipstick, only ever nude-ish glosses and tinted lip balm.

I got bought a bright red Charlotte tilbury lipstick (red carpet) for Christmas and adore it.

I would love to try more colours but don't want to spend a fortune trying out different colours.

Can anyone recommend some budget brands to try?

Oh and am I best going for matte or creamy finish?

Thank you

MUA lipsticks £ 1 from Superdrug , they do matte and Creme range.

Rimmel Kate Lipsticks.

You can google "lipstick dupes" to try and match the cheap copies of expensive brands.

mrslebon · 03/01/2016 22:41

Top Shop do some nice lippies with a velvet finish - worth a look.

dottyaboutstripes · 03/01/2016 22:43

H&M lipstick is really good!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/01/2016 23:22

You need to go out and try them really .

I loathe the KM Rimmel, really dry but I bought one for my DD (dupe for a Mac one) and she loves it.

I don't like Soap&Glory, too drying

The one I go back to over and over is an M&S Autograph matte (I was dubious because matte=dry but it's lovely)

And a really ancient No7 (Opulence I think) limited edition Christmas one from about 2012 Shock that I'm sure should go in the bin now.

I really wanted to love Poppy King / Lipstick Queen but they didn't work for me either .

TBH, I think for red lipstick don't skimp.
It;s something (if I wore red) I'd pay ££ for and maybe look at higher end (if they were cruelty free of course)

I have just bought a Maybelline nude lipstick only because it was the best shade I could find in Boots. I always wear lipgloss or balm and my lips get really dry. So, in the name of research, I will wear it today to see how I get on (with Carmex on standby).

Asskicker · 04/01/2016 07:04

Thank you ladies!

I do think I need to try a few different ones, just had no idea where to start. May nip to boots and super drug and just bite the bullet and try a few different ones.

I'll use a lip brush and any I don't like I'll let dd try, hopefully one of us will like them Grin

I just bought one from Rimmel, I think it's called the ultimate or the only one lipstick or something. It is lovely.

I hate Loreal and Maybelline lipsticks because I think they smell of play dough.

MooMinCow · 04/01/2016 08:36

I really like Revlon super lustrous lipsticks. The creme finish is lovely (avoid the pearl finish, says on the bottom of tube). Favourites include Fire and Ice (coral red), Cherries in the Snow (pinky red) and Revlon Red.

Soap and Glory do some nice shades too. Mantrap is an unusual muted red.

mrssmiling · 04/01/2016 08:48

You might like to try that free service No7 offer - they have a device that scans your skin colour, and based on the results, will suggest a foundation shade that matches perfectly. They also give you a little card with lots of lipstick colours to suit your skin tone. Very useful if you want to try out something different.

PollyPerky · 04/01/2016 09:57

Rimmel KM- nice shades- I love a nude one- but the perfume or something dries my lips terribly so can't really use.

Have you had a look at brands like No 17 (Boots) and Bourjois?

SunshinePanda · 04/01/2016 20:16

Used the Maybelline lipstick today; I like how it looks and my lips have survived without becoming too dry. Didn't even notice the smell of play dough. Grin

I like Barry M.

I bought lipstick that was gorgeous, and quite moisturising on my lips.

IWannaHoldYourHand · 04/01/2016 20:29

My favorite ever red is a MUA one for £1. I've never found a red that suits me better.

mimiasovitch · 04/01/2016 23:27

I have a proper lipstick problem, and of the many, many I keep buying my favourites are the L'oreal colour riche range. There are two colours that I adore so much I've bought an extra two of each shade just in case they discontinue them.

Asskicker · 05/01/2016 06:58

Thanks again ladies.

I love Barry M nail varnish, it is a great brand.

My friend just told me about a company called Kiko that has just opened a store near here.

Anyone tried that brand?

Have never tried Kiko
This is one of my favourite MUA lipsticks
It's the Matte range and it's called Scarlet Siren.

And yes... Join Mrs Gloss & the goss on Facebook and you will see pictures of people in lipsticks all of the time. There are a few girls who love their lipstick on there.

AncoraAmarena · 05/01/2016 17:21

I love Kiko lipsticks and have a few - my favourites are the cheapy ones, which I think are under £4. Can't remember the name of the range though but I have a corally pink, an orange and a warm deep red.

Asskicker · 05/01/2016 18:34

Wow! You all know so much!

Can't thank you enough!

Never had a matte one so will give that a go!

Swampmonster39 · 05/01/2016 21:14

I love the primark luxury ones for 1.50 with the gold packaging.
I find it lasts much longer than mua.

Asskicker · 06/01/2016 13:00

I have placed an order with Kiko. I can't get into town for the next week or so and they have a sale on.

Free postage too. Ordered a range of colours and textures! Can't wait to get them and get into town to try some more!
