How to look 'expensive'

I'm not sure if that's the right word but I was in Sainsbury's today and the woman in the queue in front of me just looked 'expensive'.
She wasn't wearing anything remarkable - a leather jacket with a fur collar, skinny jeans and brown knee length boots but somehow she looked 'done' whereas I looked like a sack of spuds.
How to achieve that expensive look without the budget?

I think bone structure has a lot to do with it and I think that we are talking about a very specific kind of expensive.

I look expensive and spend a lot on clothes but I doubt I meet the MN definition of expensive. My face makes clear that I am a fishwife in a posh frock.

I think it depends on the school. I wouldn't be comfy in denim at parents' evening.

I have ...erm...sturdy peasant features cracking norks and body though.

Fortunately many high cheekboned, posh men are bred through generations of Nannies to like ugly domineering, shouty, cerebral women so I'm alright there Personally I think I'm well fit.

This is a look that works for Amal to hop on a plane and for anyone else to wear for a smart lunch minus the roll on suitcase and this look could work for Kate Middleton and would be much edgier than her ubiquitous coat dresses and sledge heels.

VB,now thats is a baffling case, people still cant shake off her former fashion choices, she did some horrendous fashion crimes for many years , and then all of sudden, poof all that is gone,and is replaced with very understated and streamlined clothes, its like a she had a fashion personality transplant,

Sorry, I am off at a bit of a tangent but how Victoria Beckham is considered a stylish I will never know. this is an example of an outfit that looks expensive and awful.

Ah well, I'm a bit overweight but have fabulous bone structure so I'm told and DH is a gentleman and kindly says not to lose too much because thin women have lines and no boobs.

Perceptions differ.

To me and others I know Amal Clooney and Victoria Beckham are firmly in the try-too-hard category and definitely not ones to inspire effortless chic, aka 'expensive'.
