I am going for

  1. Cut and colour. Not everyone colours their hair some of us only when we needed to at about 42
  2. Wrap dresses and big tits

Yes but there is something very distinctive about those cover-up-the-grey salon highlights. I don't know what it is but they're easy to spot and they've become a bit of a uniform. I still think they can look good but if women are shelling out for them purely to look younger, well they may be wasting their money.

GarlicCake · 03/01/2016 18:55

If you can tell they're "salon highlights", some might say they weren't expensive enough!

SirChenjin · 03/01/2016 19:02

I have absolutely no idea what salon highlights to cover the grey are Confused. Can you post some pictures to demonstrate?

TaliZorah · 03/01/2016 19:03

I have salon highlights wtf, I'm 22

Floisme · 03/01/2016 19:13

No I'm not going to go looking for pics or get dragged into a debate because I'm not trying to prove I'm right! I'm talking about my personal impressions and I'm happy to concede they're wrong half the time.

My point is just that correctly or not, I have begun to associate salon highlights with covering up grey hair. It doesn't mean it doesn't look good but it's becoming a uniform.

TaliZorah · 03/01/2016 19:15

Flo I think we're just confused as to how you think this

i1.wp.com/therighthairstyles.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/caramel-highlights-on-light-brown-base.jpg?resize=500%2C567

Is old looking

Floisme · 03/01/2016 19:23

Well even I can see that model is young Grin What I'm saying is that when I see a middle aged woman with those caramel highlights, it doesn't make me think she looks younger and I may even assume - shock horror - that she's older than she is.

GarlicCake · 03/01/2016 19:47

That doll-face she's pulling would look even more stupid at 50 [evil]

SirChenjin · 03/01/2016 22:21

Ah OK - so you've added 'middle aged woman' into the 'salon highlights' mix.

Do you think women automatically add highlights to make themselves look younger - or do you think they might just think they don't like grey hair on themselves for a myriad of different reasons?

SirChenjin · 03/01/2016 22:44

Sorry - that's sounds really arsey Blush. I just mean I don't think women (I include myself in this) stick highlights in their hair to look younger, it's more than they're not ready for the grey for many reasons Smile

Floisme · 03/01/2016 22:47

No of course not automatically. I agree grey hair isn't always flattering. But some posts on this thread have implied that looking younger is a primary motive:
Why would anyone under 50 choose to go grey? Even if it looks 'striking', it will still age you by about 15 years. Save the looking old for when you really are old.
Or
at 46 I'm not ready to embrace the additional years that I think grey gives you.

I have nothing against highlights. I just think of them in the same way that I think of silk shirts or V neck cashmere jumpers: very nice, beautiful even but not intrinsically youthful.

I get the impression I've upset you and if so, I'm sorry. Good night.

Floisme · 03/01/2016 22:48

Sorry, I took so long to write that, I cross posted. Smile

mincebloodypie · 04/01/2016 11:52

It's only a thread on Mumsnet. It's not like we're a bunch of mods still beating you up on Brighton beach like it's 1964

That made me laugh :D

I am very much a skirt/dress person. I feel very constricted in most trousers. It's a bit of a sensory thing, really, due to the terrible eczema I used to have on my legs and stomach, plus a csection scar.

I really like vintage dresses (and good modern versions) because, generally speaking, there is plenty of good, strong material in them. I can cycle, go for a walk, clean out the chickens, or climb rocks on the beach with DD. My knickers won't show, I will be comfy, and I will look nice too. I fucking HATE the frilly, flimsy dresses I see so often these days. And what is with no necklines or sleeves? They are all high necked, peter pan collars, shift style. Makes my arms look like Hugh F-W is running them through his sausage making machine
