I am going for

  1. Cut and colour. Not everyone colours their hair some of us only when we needed to at about 42
  2. Wrap dresses and big tits

I'm loving this thread. I love Cos and all the Scandi minimalist stuff but unfortunately have the appearance of Pam St Clements.

Floisme · 31/12/2015 15:05

Well you did refer to wearers, Queenbean. I'm not suggesting you intended it as a personal remark but you moved from talking about the outfits - which was fair enough - to the people who wear them.

And models stand in stupid poses all the time - what about that awful pigeon toed look? It's hardly exclusive to this particular style.

Queenbean · 31/12/2015 15:11

Well I stand by that - genuine vintage clothing can look nice. Cheap 50s style dresses accompanied by a "ooh I'm so sexy and cheeky!" pose is not sexy at all and looks rubbish.

I agree that pigeon toed pose all looks ridiculous (Jess Cartner-Morley, I'm looking at you) but I don't know anyone who stands like that in real life. Whereas somehow 50s style always gets accompanied by that hand on hip, coquettish ooooh in real life as well.

ijustwannadance · 31/12/2015 15:20

I used to wear, and still own, lots of handmade vintage dresses. Back when I was thinner with a tiny waist. It was like they had been made for me and fit beautifully and were unique. Most new dresses are far too short waisted for me.
But this was before 'vintage' became a trend and made things so expensive.

People should wear what they feel good in. At nearly 40, I am well aware or what suits me and my body shape. I will never be able to wear a shift dress or similar as wrong shape, no pastel colours, and anything sleeveless or strappy. I don't do bare shoulders.

2016IsANewYearforMe · 31/12/2015 15:29

Tried to Google Polkadotpolly but "she" is closed for Xmas. Not sure what I should be looking for when I get there though!

TaliZorah · 31/12/2015 15:30

Well made individual dresses for under £100

2016IsANewYearforMe · 31/12/2015 15:32

Ah, I'll have to wait till they reopen then. I have to admit, I am very sceptical. Horse hair braid inside the hem? Grosgrain waist stay? Boning in the bodice? Lining and interlining?

TaliZorah · 31/12/2015 15:35

You can have boning put in if you request it. No horsehair though. Lining is there. They will do everything custom so you can request pretty much everything.

You can also just have a simple cotton dress it depends what you're after

Larastheme · 31/12/2015 15:45

mrsdevere, its vertullay impossible to find good vintage on the cheap, you will find the rubbish rayon and nylon from the 50s and on, collectors and vintage Buyers, have been buying good vintage for many years now, and selling them for high,

Coming back to 50s full dresses, Not only were the fabric better made but they used a lot for a single skirt/dress, Christian dior used up to 40 yards of black wool for his new look black skirt, the cream, jacket was boned corset, the entire thing was cleverly constructed from the inside to give a soft and feminine illusion from the outside, , back then designers sold rights of their designs to magazines shops and people would recreate them, I imagine that not many people could afford to buy or have clothes made in that style due to the high numbers of fabrics used,

SirChenjin · 31/12/2015 16:20

I bought a vintage dress and matching dress coat (60s) from ebay earlier in the year to wear to the royal garden party. The material is gorgeous, and the finishing is amazing - fully lined, with the buttons, lace panel and inserts all hand stitched. It's just sitting upstairs in my wardrobe - any idea what I could do with it? Would a vintage shop take it, or should I just try and resell on ebay?

Trills · 31/12/2015 16:30

I have just told a thread full of "nice top" that the OP is probably clever enough to realise that when they say "top" they don't mean a shit one.

Actually Queenbean, I'm quite chilled thank you very much. I'm able to discuss choices without resorting to insults because actually it's an individual choice.

This comment was insulting (not to me, because I don't have the figure or confidence to wear these clothes) and I felt that it needed challenging.

Also, these vintage dresses have sort of sexy / coy overtones to them, the wearers always seem to be standing in some coquettish position with a "who, me?!" Look on their face. And yet mostly, they're not very sexy at all because it's a bit try hard.

'Who pissed on your chips?' is a local saying, meaning what has upset you? If that's what you think implies that I'm stressed - really couldn't be further from the truth. Grin

2016IsANewYearforMe · 31/12/2015 16:51

Someone should MrsDeVere!

I think clothes should go on the "cultural journey" that food has. About 25 years ago, foodies started pointing out what quality was and why it mattered. We, the general public, have been educated.

We, the general public, still buy a lot of crap clothes though. Someone needs to get on telly and start pointing out all the badly made cheap clothes, sometimes for high prices, being fobbed off on the unsuspecting public. Once people understand darts, ease, pad stitching, canvas, back stays, three piece sleeves, etc. There is no turning back! Far better to buy less, but better.

My personal peeve for the past few years has been beautiful, stylish women, in dresses with exposed zips down the back where the sizing is wrong and it just puddles up in the small of their backs. I've seen too many "designer" dresses at formal occasions doing this.

TwentyOneGuns · 31/12/2015 16:54

The often asked question 'how do I look expensive/groomed etc' is always answered with people saying - clean hair/nails done/simple non-fashion clothes etc etc. That's true up to a point but it never works for me - I just look dull and frumpy Grin. It's a sad fact but some of us will never look expensive even if we win the lottery .

MotherofFlagons · 31/12/2015 16:54

I saw people on here recommending skater dresses for big stomachs.

Just. No.

Anyone recommending Caroline Hirons as if what she says is law!

Can't stand the woman's blog, personally!

mudandmayhem01 · 31/12/2015 17:17

I think quality has declined a lot in the last 20 years. I am currently wearing an early 90s denim skirt from top shop ( does it count as vintage if you have just had something for a long time) it has lasted really well whilst more recent top shop stuff has fallen to bits.

HortonWho · 31/12/2015 17:44

User, I believe it was a reference to this image posted upthread. I am assuming this is some sort of a catalogue image, judging from the background, but I do agree... There is an attitude trying to be tied to the dress. And it doesn't say, Hello, I'll be your surgeon this morning Mr smith.

2016is Thanks for the link, exactly what my size 12 waist & size 16 thighs are crying out for. I'm ordering 2 pairs Xmas Blush

tethersend · 31/12/2015 17:53

"There is an attitude trying to be tied to the dress. And it doesn't say, Hello, I'll be your surgeon this morning Mr smith."

😂😂

mudandmayhem01 · 31/12/2015 17:55

Could be a surgeon, on her weekend off though having a blast at a vintage themed event though!

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/12/2015 17:59

Depends on the size, shape and position of the stomach MotherofFlagons. Apple shaped with a high stomach, probably not. Tummy carried lower over the hips, can be totally fine. An apple and a heavier hourglass can have very different ways of carrying it.

theredlion · 31/12/2015 18:15

That 50s look would be ok on me but it wouldn't be very me.

When I see Cos recommended I cringe, all those straight lines are definitely not meant for me.

Skater dresses do suit me, I wear them a lot for work with a smart jacket.

The one solution for all approach is never going to work for everyone, I'm more crepey than cray-cray these days.

That said I think we are very fortunate to live in a Country(ies) where we can choose to wear what we like.
I love it that everyone is different and people look great in things I wouldn't be seen dead in.
