Sebaceous filliments

Bit of a klaxon here maybe ?!
But something have been meaning to ask !
Are you supposed to squeeze them out or leave them ?

just googled images and eeeewww some of them are hanging out

Mine just sit in my pores and every couple of weeks I sort of squeeze them for fun more than anything ! But I was wondering as they are a natural function for the skin should I be doing this ?!

I had this. I use bar soap then salicylic acid toner - the toner once per week

Causes for me were SPF and too many oily moisturisers - Shea butter particularly bad!
Now they have gone when I stopped using the above

I find exfoliating keeps mine at bay. I use my normal cleanser and a muslin cloth

My nose gets dry and flaky
So I moisturise and get these .
Maybe I need to take the exfoliating tip which I do daily with muslin cloth , but up the exfoliation somehow and moisturise less in that area?

Leave them alone. You can squeeze them out but it's pointless as by morning you will have a new one again.

I use a salicylic acid toner like Kennington which exfoliates them and stops the tops being black - it now looks like I haven't got any. The tops turn black over time as they oxidize making them look like blackheads - salicylic is oil soluble to dissolve in and gets the rubbish out . You can't exfoliate in the same way with a muslin cloth - you are rubbing off dead skin cells but not getting deep in the pores like you do with a salicylic toner. The salicylic would prob manage the dry and flaky and the filaments in one go.

My skin also prefers avoidance of oil (even lovely plant ones) and shea butter

Pixi Glow is glycolic.

Pores sadly are not doors - they don't open and close or tighten or anything else the advertising says. They just are what they are. If you have sebaceous filaments and exfoliate them, they will look a bit smaller as there isn't gunk in them - obvs this is more satisfying when the gunk was black but it's still better.

Salicylic toners - Clinique Mild Clarifying Lotion, Clearasil pads, Nip Fab Dragons Blood pads, Effaclar Duo (best if you are properly spotty), Clarins Brightening toner, Paula's Choice 2% BHA (my favourite). There are loads of others but these are the ones that get picked over and over here.

Vichy normaderm lotion in the green bottle - lasts and age. About 13 quid.

Ooh, I love Vichy Normaderm range - had forgotten that!

I had no ideaa these had a name. My chin used to be covered with them, but age has minimised them (and salicylic acid did help, at the time).

Amused by the assertion in the article I just read that "facials are a necessary treatment". I don't think anyone ever died of never having a facial

And yes, it was the clinique clarifying lotion that I used, together with the turnaround cream. I found that my skin got flaky around the edges of where I used that, though, eg around the eye area, but otherwise, they got rid of the filaments, occasional dense crops of zits and the roughness/flakiness that I had on my cheeks - great, in fact, for sensitive and reactive skin.

I used to think I had black heads but turned out they were said filaments which are now squeaky clean and much less obvious since I have started hot cloth cleansing and using an acid toner, cannot believe how much better my skin looks. I have used nip and fab pads, rodial toner and pixi glow tonic, all v good. I use Emma hardier cleanser

i used to have really bad sebaceous filaments, they've been tormenting
me for twenty years. recently i picked up better skincare habits including oil cleansing with a flannel (coughCaroline Hironscough) Pixi Glow Tonic, REN glycolactic renewal mask and also the REN clarifying clay cleanser. using a good set of products in a good routine has really helped, and my nose isn't an oil slick by lunchtime. they haven't gone away entirely and they never will but they aren't making me as miserable as they used to. strangely enough i don't have any dice with salicylic acid products. found this blog post very helpful too www.xovain.com/skin/pore-clearing-diy-facial

Right, I've just ordered the Normaderm stuff! Got the moisturiser and facial wash too. Will be back to report in a couple of weeks whether it helps my filaments!!
