Are you getting ready for no spend 2016?

Following on from the previous thread (sorry I can't find it) I'm wondering if those who signed up are ready and raring to go?

No spend 2016 is coming soon!

I think I might hide Style & Beauty from 1st January, sure what's the point?! I plan to read lots of books and declutter toys and clothes instead of lurking on ASOS, House of Fraser, Mint Velvet et al.

Are you still up for it? Xmas Smile

I'm in. Need to save for a special birthday trip in 2017 so I'll try and limit myself to replacement skin care, new undies and tights. Don't think it'll be too hard apart from fighting the urge to buy work dresses in Spring.

PennyPants · 22/12/2015 19:33

Well I'm in then.
My rule will be to stick to a budget. Around £400 for the year plus Christmas and Birthday money.
It's not very hard core is it, but it works for me as I have kept tabs previously and not gone much over budget.
Before that I was spending silly money.
I already have an idea what I want, new coat, converse, new going out top, not much else.
That's a good chunk of it spent already Smile

FunkyPeacock · 22/12/2015 19:36

Can I join you all?

I'm going for a no new clothes or shoes 2016 (well til Nov at least Xmas Wink)

My only exception will be tights and possibly a wetsuit as I'm planning to do a triathlon in 2016 (my other NY resolution!)

ButImNotTheOnlyOne · 22/12/2015 21:23

I'm in. I've done Nov and Dec so far. Altho I did buy a fifteen quid dress.

But feeling positive that I can continue.

ButImNotTheOnlyOne · 22/12/2015 21:30

I am allowing charity shop spends too. I've had some great purchases there - whistles dress, Boden jumper, warehouse blouse.

Before November though. Am pleased I've managed 2 months pretty much. If I can resist the Jan sales I'll amaze myself!

samesizetoes · 22/12/2015 22:14

I've spent a fortune in recent months after starting a new job in a smart/casual office after a decade of wearing uniform and not being allowed to wear make-up, nail polish or perfume and I've been getting a bit carried away.

I have tons of make-up to last me and enough nail polish to wear a different colour for the whole year so I certainly won't be buying any of that in 2016 but, I am going to allow myself 1 clothes/shoes purchase per month.

Not quite cold turkey but mindful spending instead.

Magicrealism · 29/12/2015 09:58

Today is the big wardrobe clear out day, based on Kondo. I'll do a big drop off at the charity shop later.

Actually looking forward to the challenge. I'm so fed up with the constant cycle of planning / browsing / wanting / buying/ not appreciating.

For me, it absolutely is a response to a very busy stressful job, so I'm planning to " self-sooth" through long walks outside and nice baths.

EmilyPunkhurst · 29/12/2015 11:17

Sounds like your shopping habit echoes mine Magic, and for the same reason too.

My last act of buying has been some coat hangers. My wardrobe sort-out is scheduled for Monday (when I'm on leave). It won't be a huge throw-out/get-rid because I've been doing that for months, but I still have some things I could add to my pile of things for Ebay. I'm also going to take lots of pictures for ebaying purposes next week. It will feel good to get organised.

Its a good time of year for me to do this - I've always cleared out cupboards and so on in the new year, there's something about wanting to shed the old year which affects me in a cleaning/clearing kind of way.

I feel very resolute. Feels great actually.

Levantine · 29/12/2015 12:28

I'm in. I managed the whole of November which was both quite a big deal and at the same time surprisingly relaxing. I do a lot of online shopping through boredom and it was fantastic to be off the treadmill of sending things back and tracking returns.

I do need some decent black slim leg work trousers but after that I'm done

hiccupgirl · 29/12/2015 18:34

Can I join in too but going for just 1 shoes or clothes purchase per month.

As background I've been unwell on and off for 15 months and lost 3.5 stone by the summer last year. Nothing fitted me so I had to buy new clothes but a) I got very carried away with being able to buy non plus sized clothes for the first time ever and b) I was very stressed about having major surgery in the summer so obsessively bought clothes to help me cope with it. So I have plenty to wear, in fact way too much and need to help my bank balance recover. I also need to get my shopping habit under control as part of my general get my head back together.

I did buy a half price coat from Fat Face and a 70% off dress from Phase 8 yesterday - dress is for a wedding in March. But that's it for this pay cheque.

Next I need to organise my wardrobe because there is just too much in there!

redredread · 29/12/2015 20:14

I need to join in with this. I have dozens of books that I haven't read, and loads of clothes I rarely wear. I also waste time shopping online and, even though I return lots, I don't need to buy anything more for ages. So one personal purchase per month (shoes/clothes/book - just one in total not one of each!). Replacement toiletries/knickers aren't included (though I have a stockpile, so doubt I'll need these soon). I'm planning to last the whole year. I need to avoid charity shops, as I somehow think they don't count, so almost always buy something.

To the pp who asked about recycling clothes, our dump/recycling centre has a bin for clothes and shoes that are no good even for the charity shop.

FiveShelties · 29/12/2015 20:54

I would love to join in too - I am aiming to reduce all this stuff I have everywhere. So only absolutely essential spending here, I am absolutely determined and looking forward to being able to see some space in the wardrobe(s), drawers and cupboards.

maybemyrtle · 29/12/2015 21:12

I've gone a bit nuts in the sales (despite not actually wanting or needing anything Hmm ) so once all of that has been returned I want to work from a clean slate. Just looked at my credit card transactions online and felt a bit sick... Having gained some weight this year I didn't have much that fitted me well so I've given myself something of a free rein, but I have filled those gaps now - and I am hoping to get back to usual weight by the summer anyway. So I need to just stop buying stuff! I turn 40 this year and it's my goal to have various aspects of my life in a good place for then, inc. weight and healthier shopping habits.

Will be watching this thread :)

clippityclop · 30/12/2015 14:12

I have just spent a few minutes unsubscribing from retailer e-mails. This should save me quite a bit . I am guilty of falling for online clothing 'bargains' that I don't need (bugger off Boden). My DSM gave dds generous Monsoon vouchers for Christmas which they are keen to part exchange with me for cash, quite understandable as they don't fit the clothes any more and there's only so much stationery, bags and sparkly stuff our house can hold. I may look for some sort of posh frock for a black tie do we have to go to and then that is it. Any money I'm tempted to spend on clobber will be siphoned off into the holiday fund.

redredread · 30/12/2015 22:07

Unsubscribing from mailing lists is a great idea, as so much of my online browsing is led by clicking through from marketing messages.

HairsprayQueen · 30/12/2015 22:20

I've been unsubscribing to emails that come in, have deleted asos, etsy and shop style apps (and will delete vestiere once my last order finally comes through). Have also unsubscribed to lots of blogs and Instagram accounts that I don't find absolutely useful and enjoyable.

I'm ready for 2016 (except I couldn't find any trainers I like so I'll have to wait until my old ones are wrecked now, casual ones, not fitness as I'll obviously replace them as needed)

Shop · 01/01/2016 07:51

Day 1, I've been lurking & plucking up the courage to commit.
Unsubscribing from some emails I'd missed.

EmilyPunkhurst · 01/01/2016 10:16

Day 1 for me too Shop.

It took me sooooo long to unsubscribe from everything and I'm shocked at how few emails I receive now there are none from retailers. That on its own should be enough to make me pause and think.

I did some sales shopping - some of which I have to send back - as my last hurrah. And now I'm done.

Floppityflop · 01/01/2016 10:50

I'm in, may need to make exception for tights, bras and haircuts. I don't need to economise too much fortunately but I badly need to declutter. I literally have clothes from the early nineties still in my wardrobe! By the way I've seen Kondo mentioned on the site a few times. Is that a decluttering thing?

redredread · 01/01/2016 12:07

Marie Kondo is great - some slightly eccentric ideas in her book (e.g. thanking your handbag contents for their good service each evening Smile) but lots of great stuff, including the idea that you should think about what to keep rather than what to give away. The criterion should be to keep only those things that spark joy. I got a lot from the book.

ButImNotTheOnlyOne · 01/01/2016 12:15

I'm in for January. I've done Nov and Dec. I'm thinking month by month as a full year seems impossible.
I got a scarf and socks for Xmas.
Am definitely letting hair cuts in. I'd look awful without.

For me I'm focusing on putting together good outfits for each day at work using what I have. I've worn things differently and put stuff together I never have before.

Am wearing jeans far less, but that could be my age.

I took a couple of things back to John Lewis yesterday and good grief that was hard to Pass all the Alice Temperley sales stuff. But I did it.

Also ordered a warehouse mega bargain coat. But I knew before it arrived I was taking it back. Total mood shopping. It is lovely but I don't need it.

PennyPants · 01/01/2016 12:40

I've been spending. My work boots started leaking so I had to replace them and I finally got rid of an old pair of Converse in the summer that I had had for years and wore to death, so another replacement, which is the mindful spending bit.
I also bought a coat with my Christmas money, which I didn't need but have wanted since October and I love it and it sparked joy Grin so mindful ish spending.
Almost a quarter of my budget gone for this year, which is fine as they were my main wants. And I have been doing this for a while now so have already got lots of nice things that fit well and I'm happy with.
