Are you getting ready for no spend 2016?

Following on from the previous thread (sorry I can't find it) I'm wondering if those who signed up are ready and raring to go?

No spend 2016 is coming soon!

I think I might hide Style & Beauty from 1st January, sure what's the point?! I plan to read lots of books and declutter toys and clothes instead of lurking on ASOS, House of Fraser, Mint Velvet et al.

Are you still up for it? Xmas Smile

I got paid today. I'm not going to go shopping in the sales.

mumsnit · 18/12/2015 20:39

Is it allowed to do sales and then no spend after that for 2016 😀

I'm desperately needing undies, nightwear and a few basics but really don't need any more clothes after that.

My wardrobe is full but not with the right things. I've become so confused by what does suit me that I keep getting it wrong. Bought lots of stuff this year that I almost immediately regretted. I'm going to spend some thinking and reading blogs etc so when I start buying again it'll be more successful!!

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 18/12/2015 21:18

Pinterest is brilliant for ideas on how to style particular items of clothing or footwear.

I intend to take inspiration from it and make full use of what I already own in 2016 instead of aimlessly buying whatever I think is going to be that last pair of shoes I "need" or the top that's going to "complete" my wardrobe.

No more!

Mumsnit of course you can shop in the sales and then sit out for the rest of the season/ year. I'd do really well if I limited my shopping to sales twice a year. I'm also a feel-good shopper.

I've revisited a lot of old stuff from my wardrobe. With a pair of high-waisted coated slim black jeans, my old cropped jackets suddenly make sense - no need to buy new work outfits. My old black long-sleeved cotton tees work well with a maxi cardigan. I've also found that high-quality knitwear is timeless, I rediscovered a Norwegian cardigan I bought in the mid-1990s and wear it frequently! I've also found that I have lots of overlooked cosmetics.

orlakielyimnot · 19/12/2015 16:28

This is hard. I'm surprised by how much I'm thinking about shopping. Thankfully I finished my Christmas shopping ages ago so I don't have to wrestle with the temptation directly any time soon. However, like someone said up thread, my problem is with online shopping and not actual shops so it does mean I will have to grapple with such easy access. What an interesting process this is. I knew I had a problem but I had no idea! At this point if I last any time at all I'll be proud. In 12 Step programs you get chips for increments and talk about taking things one day at a time. I'm on day 3 and I won't shop today! There's nothing I need. I have a lot of new and lovely clothes that suit me!

BlueEyedWonder · 19/12/2015 17:19

In the past, I've wasted money and time buying one more top or another pair of shoes to complete my capsule wardrobe. Of course, as a feel good shopper, that capsule wardrobe is never going to be complete.
I now keep lists of my spring/summer wardrobe and my autumn/winter wardrobe and only allow myself to buy things I need.
I don't get paid til new years eve so not tempted by the early sales as money is committed to Xmas.

PennyPants · 19/12/2015 19:18

I really like the clothes I have now, so it should be easy, but I know I won't be able to last a year. I'm buying a new coat next time I go to the shopping centre for a start. Also when things start to look tatty I get rid of them and replace if necessary. I will stick to a budget though as I won't be needing much.
I might just observe, if that's OK? As a find all this quite interesting.

mumsnit · 19/12/2015 19:22

I told DS and DH that I wasn't going to buy any clothes in 2016 and the reaction was GrinGrinGrinShockHmm

Makes me even more determined to do this! Am going to check out Pintrest and looking forward to trying out different combinations from my wardrobe. I like the idea ^^ of keeping a list of clothes for each season. Also have a box of cosmetics with lots of half used products that i need to look through again!

Dowser · 19/12/2015 21:17

Love my stuff and stash. Got 6 new dresses this week. Mainly sale stuff and warm winter clothing which I really needed naturally.

Good luck to you all. It's not worth getting into debt over.

WhoisLucasHood · 19/12/2015 21:28

I've done this this year, only it's more like mindful spending. I now own clothes that I wear and feel good in. I only have beauty products that work for me. It's not that hard to do and it's improved our finances so much that we're going to Orlando next year. I'm definitely keeping it up next year. Let me know if I can help in any way.

legohurtswhenyoustandonit · 19/12/2015 22:18

I'm in, but only to a limited extent. I have more than enough casual clothes but need some stuff for work. Haven't bought anything since the start of November but I'm about to buy a few pairs of work shoes in the sale.

Methenyouplus4 · 20/12/2015 08:31

Just to say I did this last year; I managed Jan-Sept with mo new purchases of clothes/ beauty products. I really enjoyed it as made me appreciate what I had and find new combinations, it also allowed me think about my own style rather than just blinds following fashion. By September I had to get some socks and a copule of things for work. Initially I bought clothes from eBay to avoid buying new and while I got some bargains, after some complete disasters, I caved and went to the shops. Thoughts are that I was totally overwhelmed when I returned to shops by price of clothes and choice. Consequently I have tended to stick with buying fewer, higher quality goods from small shops. Really glad I did this and may do a 'one item per month' challenge next year so I really think about what I need.

FrustratedFrugal · 20/12/2015 09:23

I'm really inspired by the thoughtful posts on this thread. I'm signing up for a mindful shopping 2016. I will try my best to resist feel-good shopping, trying only to buy items when they serve a genuine purpose, not because I want to lift my mood or reward myself. I've avoided shops and limited my blog-reading, it seems to help. I can buy some new items, but those should not be hasty impulse purchases. And I will also invest in experiences - those always feel better in retrospect.

I also need to figure out where I can recycle a bagful of totally worn out clothes. For some reason, it is super difficult for me to let go of things. Today I decided I am letting go of a pair of pajamas. The fabric has gone nubbly and the elastic has stretched out.

FrustratedFrugal · 20/12/2015 09:31

So to clarify, no spend might be too ambitious for me, but will join a low spend 2016! We've had quite a few no spend/low spend months here on S&B in 2015, they have definitely been a morale boost and my finances are in a much better shape.

PennyPants · 20/12/2015 13:16

I would be up for a low spend/ mindful shopping thread frugal for 2016.

It would help me to keep on track. Prefer to have a budget rather than cold turkey type no spend months. One £10 purchase and it feels like a fail iyswim.

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 20/12/2015 13:47

I'm all up for adapting this thread to suit everyone's needs. My no spend meant no frivolous clothes or shoes purchases.

If I need shampoo or cleanser or a haircut I will get them because I don't have a bad habit or problem there.

I compulsively buy clothes and shoes so this will make up my no spend for 2016!

girlguide123 · 20/12/2015 15:42

I'd definitely like to join in with a slow-buy.

NO NEW PERFUME until Easter (when I shall be passing thru the duty frees).

GoneAndDone · 21/12/2015 13:28

I started the No New Clothes in 2016 thread, have been doing it since 1st November and it's going well so far! I'm not doing a no spend thing, though, just no clothes/shoes/accessories. I'm surprised at how easy I've found it, tbh, as before that I'd not gone a week without buying something for a long time. 10 months to go. Grin

It's here if anyone is interested:

AnnaFiveTowns · 21/12/2015 13:49

I'm in! Low, mindful spending rather than no spending though, otherwise I'm setting myself up to fail!

MartinRohdesBellybuttonFluff · 21/12/2015 13:49

Cheers GoneAndDone! I couldn't find your thread before starting this one (I would have rather continued on yours). Going back for a good read now. Smile

(Btw, deleted the ASOS app off my phone this morning)

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/12/2015 13:54

I definitely won't do a no spend, but will try to stick to low spend/thinking carefully first spend. Last year I made really careful purchases, which meant that money was used (mostly!) wisely and the things I bought have been worn a lot. The only exceptions to this were a few charity shop buys for holidays, and one skirt that I haven't yet worn as much as I thought I would (be will definitely dig out again in the Spring).

I'm already mentally preparing my list for the next few months. The plan is to only buy better versions of things I wear over and over again - in my case, this will be black skinnies, black and grey tops, a casual grey dress and some really nice flat red/burgundy shoes (if I can track down the perfect pair).

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 21/12/2015 14:19

I'm on board too - not no spend entirely, but only replacing things that absolutely need replacing. I couldn't manage without foundation (I already use a relatively cheap one) & really do need a new pair of jeans as the one I have been living in this year have finally gone so thin at the crotch they have split Blush.

I am going to make a conscious effort to buy second-hand for anything we absolutely do need wherever possible - eBay is great for clothes for DD (4) for example.

I am also going to try to do a dry 2016 for health reasons. I'll start with dry January and see how I get on! I need to lose weight, and now that I've hit 40 I'm feeling quite "now or never" about it! With that in mind I'm also resolving to not spend anything on food or drink when out & about - apart from the weekly Aldi shop. I have a terrible habit of picking up a sandwich, or a cake, or a coke, or some chocolate which makes me both poorer and fatter! A homemade sandwich may well be less appetising but it's healthier and cheaper - and that's what I need!

Neveradullm0ment · 22/12/2015 11:57

I'm doing this but I am allowed to buy underwear and new gym gear (I exercise regularly) but only if it is replacing something else. Another thing I'm doing is replacing - so if I sell something on eBay - I can buy something to replace that. I was thinking of investing in a suit before 31 December, and that may be that for 12 months!

SayAGreatBigThankyou · 22/12/2015 17:19

I'm kind of in - want to do Project 333 but am really short of clothes, so am going for a considered purchase each month.

HairsprayQueen · 22/12/2015 17:49

Yes I'm in- no clothes (obviously unless everything turns to rags), shoes only when really required and makeup/skincare only when old stuff is used up. I'm buying trainers in the sales as I do need them and then that's it.

Perhaps I'll even find motivation in losing weight to fit into the cases of almost brand new stuff I can't fit into in the loft!
