real fur bobble hats and keyrings

Has anyone noticed this trend? It's seems to be fashionable to wear fur bobble hats with bobbles made from rabbit, fox and racoon, and have keyrings made from the same. A couple of boutiques in town are selling them. I find it really distasteful and wondering if people font realise or just don't care.

All the ones I have seen are fake fur.

I've seen that too jinglebells. I was really disappointed when I saw me & em selling real fur pom-poms - I even tweeted them to say how disappointed I was (unsurprisingly, no response back...)

I wondered whether it was considered "acceptable" now - I'm old enough to remember all the ani-fur campaigns in the 80's/90's though, and still don't agree with it, particularly for something as frivolous as a pompom!

Yep I keep seeing this. There was a stall at work selling hats and shawls with rabbit fur pom poms. I find it depressing that it's coming back into fashion and the people find them acceptable.

I read somewhere that it's just so cheap to produce real fur products in China now that it's really taking off and because it's cheaper than good quality fake fur people don't realise they're buying real fur.

There's loads of fur around now I've noticed. All the expensive winter down coats/parkas have fur trim. A lot say it is ethically sourced - not quite sure how this is done but would be interested to learn more.

I don't live in the UK, but also a trend here. I don't get it. Also remember the anti- fur campaigns. What went wrong?

I could be wrong, but I was under the impression that rabbit fur is a by product of the rabbit meat industry, so not really any different from leather. That being said I'm still uncomfortable with real fur coming back into fashion and becoming acceptable again.

I'm having one of my dogs neutered in the new year.

I'll ask the vet to keep his furry balls for me and I can sew one on my hat and keep one for a key ring so that I can be 'bang on trend'.

I was just looking on Instagram and someone has pointed out that a blogger is wearing a hat with a real fur pompom. It makes me a little uncomfortable but also know little about how fur is ethically sourced.

Tate15 lol, you are funny. My friend's dd works in a local boutique that sells the real fur keyrings, and she came out with the line that they are a byproduct too. I've been googling, and there's also some concern that some of the fake or faux fur is actually real. On one of the local Facebook pages, someone was asking for present ideas for teens, and someone recommended a company that sells knitted hats with real fur bobbles. I find it abhorrent.

Fur seems to definitely have come in from the cold so to speak.

I came over all funny ruining my £10 gap bobble was real fur after reading this. Pleased to report that it is mainly acrylic with a dash of polyester 👍Phew.

That explains why my fur pompom isn't as impressive as other people's though.

Well rabbit fur IS a by product. We eat rabbits. Seems a shame to just throw the skin away when it can be used.

I suspect most of the rabbit fur on the high street comes from China where the rabbits are bred purely for the fur.

I know raccoon dogs are bred for their fur in China and Inhumanely killed to get it too. I was looking for a fake Pom Pom for my beanie and came across lots of real raccoon fur pom poms going cheap - I wonder if they are sourced from China?

I was pretty disgusted esp since it was a lot harder to find decent fake Pom poms since eBay is swamped by the real fur products

I noticed this last winter too. I stopped following a blogger as she was 'gifted' a raccoon fur bobble hat. There were quite a few comments from people, including me, saying that they were uncomfortable with the idea of real fur. Seems it's carrying on this winter too.

None of know how ethically the fur is sourced. I find it really depressing that real fur is making a comeback.

My friend has one of the keyrings. I am 99% sure it's real fur, it is far too soft and downy underneath to be fake. she was bought it as a present and would be devastated if she knew it was real. She honestly believes it's fake. :(

I love my hats and enjoy wearing 'em. Were jolly good for naked chemo head too last year. I wear leather and suede boots as well.

A friend has recently bought a real fur headband. I was surprised as I thought it was one of those things you just didn't really do, though we're a bit young to have really appreciated the anti-fur campaigns of the 80s and 90s.

Also we surely don't eat enough rabbit for all of this fur to be purely a by-product?
