Hair coming out in handfuls after conditioning it.

I'm 45, have fine mid length hair. Shampooing it is fine but after I put conditioner in my hair seems to come out in handfuls. Am I doing something wrong? Is there an explanation? I'm using Elvive products.

Maybe you're rubbing/rinsing to much? Do you make sure to only condition the ends and not the roots?

bigbuttons · 07/12/2015 22:11

Mine comes out loads when I condition. I've come to the conclusion that it's all the loose hairs sticking together and coming away more easily if that makes sense?

Needafiltercoffee · 08/12/2015 11:25

Thanks for your replies. I will try consciously only conditioning the ends and see if that makes a difference.

I have this as well. I think bigbuttons has a point, but even so, mine is way more than the average 100 hairs a day hair loss. My hair is SO thin Sad Loads more comes out when I brush too. I seem to be covered in my hair constantly.

Yikes. I treat my hair with kid gloves.

I use faith in nature shampoo and conditioner but I do think it's the loose ones just coming out.

I also put kombucha tea in the final rinse as I hope it will Improve it. It certainly makes it glossy and shiny.

I usually only brush twice a day with a tangle teaser brush. Once in morning and before bed to put it into a loose ponytail.

I wash my hair every 4-6 days. As I get older it has got less greasy. If you've got thin hair I think the less you do to it the better. Especially with harsh chemicals. I would look for the gentlest most chemical free shampoo and conditioner I could find.

Oh and if it's windy I always keep a scrunchy round my wrist to tie it it back.

No point in giving it more stress.

bigbuttons · 08/12/2015 13:56

yes I also you use faith in nature, it's really brilliant stuff. My scalp is so much healthier and my hair really shines now. I wash mine about every 5 days.It needs less frequent washing since I switched to the faith in nature stuff.

WhataRacquet · 08/12/2015 14:28

This happens me too and the conditioner that comes with hair colour seems to be the worst so I only condition occasionally now. I put Argan oil on it instead.

burnishedsilver · 08/12/2015 14:29

Mine used to do that. Hair and nail vitimans sorted it.

I'm another Faith in Nature devotee. I also wash my hair less frequently 4-6 days. I handle it with care, only use a wide tooth comb. Seems to be less hair falling.

Youvegottobekidding · 08/12/2015 18:17

Mine does this too and like WhataRacquet said, more so with the conditioners that come with box colours. I thought initially it was because I'm a bit naughty as I have a tendency to go overboard with hair colouring sometimes & I begin to panic slightly as I think my hairs falling out as I've coloured it too much! But I still get hair loss whatever I use & even when I've been good & not coloured my hair, have you tried switching conditioners to see if that works - sometimes a different brand doesn't cause as much to come out iukwim? I've also heard getting a trim helps, but in my experience I can't say it has for me!

bigbuttons · 08/12/2015 18:24

conditioner does not cause hair to fall out though. You just notice it more.

PurpleTreeFrog · 08/12/2015 18:25

Exactly. It's all the 'dead' hair that's already loose, coming off in your hands because the conditioner lubricates it. It's a good thing.

Needafiltercoffee · 08/12/2015 19:40

Thanks all for your replies. I've looked at the Faith in Nature products on Amazon and the grapefruit and orange one caught my eye in particular as its for normal/greasy hair. I wash mine every other day because I wake up with greasy bed head every morning. I do get regular trims and like you, youvegottobekidding, I notice it more with the conditioners with boxed colours (I use the "washes out in 24 washes" variety) it's quite scary!
