Gap children's coats - sizing?

Posted in chat but not sure if here is better.. DS is very awkward and hates his (new, sigh) winter coat. The only one he will wear is one which is too small and doesn't do up, or a rain jacket which is far too thin.

As Gap have promo codes etc and as his fear of puffy things is creating such a huge obstacle each day I was thinking of getting him a coat from there - but he's between sizing.

He is 6 and in M&S coats he needs a 6-7 - but I seem to remember Gap being weird sizes? SO I wasn't sure if XS, or S would be better. He's also very awkward if he perceives something to be too big Confused [santa]

Thanks

DS2 is 4 (very nearly 5) and is pretty tall for his age so wears a S in the boy's range and a 6-7 leg in their jeans so I'd suggest your DS would need an S. Their sizes are a bit funny - could you order two coats and simply keep the one that fits best?

AnnekaRice · 25/11/2015 11:57

They are funny, as he needed age 6 trousers when he was 4, but still wears an age 3 jumper from there somehow. The adult sizing is even weirder.. Agree might be best to order 2 but I'm very disorganised so I'd do something daft like fail to return one of them! keep it simple, etc.

Thanks for help, don't think we've had anything in an 'S' and had pictured it to be more like 7-8 possibly, so I will try 'S' and see how it goes!

I think they come up small. My tall 2 year old has an age 4 and it's not that roomy..

FankEweVeryMuch · 25/11/2015 20:02

My average sized 7 year old has a S in the prima loft coat. The M was massive.

FankEweVeryMuch · 25/11/2015 20:03

Oh and he wears 7-8 in m&s/ next and most other places.

My son is 6 - quite small though wears 4-5 - and we had to get a coat from the "baby gap" section to fit him. My tall 7 year old nephew is in a Medium coat and it will last him next winter too.

AnnekaRice · 25/11/2015 20:34

Yeah, I think baby gap section comes up small, and gapkids comes up big..
ah, if only child were less fussy/coat refusenik-ing..

Could you order both and take one back? You'll also get free delivery then too.

update! I managed to investigate in store, and the XS is marked '4-5' and so on, on the store labels- S was a good size and true to size (but we didn't get it, because he objected to the hood Hmm [despair])

id say gap comes up small these days. Used to come up huge, but definitely not now. My daughter wears 10-11 in most places as a tall and average, not big but not skinny, almost 10 yr old but new stuff from gap has been xl which is an age 12.
