Trainee hairdressers

My local salon has hiked their prices, and I can't afford it anymore. I was in town last week and saw that a local college has opened a trainee salon. I had a quick Google and they offer trainees of level 1, 2 and 3, though I have no idea what each level means. I keep thinking how bad can it be? They might even style my hair wavy/curly-ish instead of insisting on blow drying it straight

Level 1 2 3 are the nvq levels at my local college, so a level 3 will of had the most training. I have had my hair done by a 2 and a 3 and it has been fine, they are well supervised and no different from a salon really, I always have level 1 doing just a blow dry, it's a cheap way to get your hair done and it helps them learn so win win !

Level 3 are the most qualified. A lot of people I know use the local hair and beauty college and say they're better than some pro hairdressers because they don't want to mess up they're being watched like Hawks & if anything does go wrong which is rare the teachers take over.

i get my hair cut at a training school. they are all supervised and do a great job. $10 and 1/2 of that is tip !

Yes I go to my local college and have a level 2 or a 3 - my haircut recently was with a level 3 - I only wanted a wet cut - it was a tenner and very nice - the girl works in a salon locally 5 days a week and wants to get level 3 to become a tricologist - a wet cut with her at salon is around £30. The only time it was a bad hair cut was when the tutor (!) decided to cut into my fridge way too much - it was terrible all short and spikey like Rod Stewart which looked terrible with my long poker straight hair. Yes the students are watched and the tutor gets the student to explain to her (after the student has spoken to me) what she will do before any hair is washed let alone cut.

I used to get my hair cut at a local college - it took FOREVER, so make sure you take a book. I was always happy with the end result though.

I've been going to my local college for years, saved £££££££, yes, it takes a bit longer. They have qualified hairdresser watching over. I have to go to a regular salon in the long summer holidays, 3 times the price!

If you want to guarantee a good cut/ colour or whatever you need a level 2 or 3.
If you want to be out this year, opt for level 3.

They do a really good job ime and of course are over seen.
Most Salons only have level 2/3 unless you go for the higher priced stylists.

I have very curly hair and my friend who is a lecturer at college over heard me talking about having it chemically straightened.
Not like her to miss an opportunity she got her most advanced students to do it.
This was some years ago now and I'd never have it done again as it was shit growing out.
They did an amazing job though, so go for it.

They do what you want - but you will tell the receptionist when you phone to book what you are after so you will get the appropriate student

My friend used to cut mine at college, I was her short hairpractice, she was really good, yes it took a bit longer but fab for the price

I used to go to the Toni and Guy Academy in London, years ago, where they taught London techniques to experienced hairdressers from all over Europe. It was always very good. I wouldn't use a student, not even a Level 3, for a restyle because it's the ability to envisage what something new will look like and devise a cut to flatter the face, and I don't think that can be taught.

When I was at uni I used to always get my hair done at a training college. Took forever, but it was dirt cheap and always turned out well. Used to get the most amazing updos for balls as they could use it for their portfolio, and sometimes there would be people who were already fully qualified but getting their wedding hair (or whatever) qualification.
