Help me find warm boots good for snow and ice?

Am visiting family around Christmas and have been told to get good boots as they always get snow!

I want something 'wearable' day to day though rather than huge snowboots!

Budget around £60 but could go higher for the right ones!

go to an outdoors shop and get some decent walking boots/shoes. They will work on snow although nothing grips on ice. You could add those yak trak things although if it is icy, walk on the grass verge.

forget fashion items.

Boots that are suitable for snow are unlikely to be suitable for "day to day wear" and, indeed, if you have been outdoors in snowy conditions it's customary to remove your footwear on returning home, or change it when reaching work etc.

Unless it has been factory treated to be water repellent and all stitching/seams are waterproof, suede and leather won't be up to the job and walking shoes/boots are unlikely to suffice as they rarely extend above ankle height.

Go to eBay and search 'snow boots'. Sorel boots are great - warm and waterproof. Made for Canadian winters

I got a pair of these Mammal boots last winter - intended for ski trip but I lived in them here. So cosy, quite stylish (IMHO) and the ice grip thing on the sole is fab. Shop around, I think I got mine for £65.

I love Sorrell too but bit more ££.

Merrell do fab boots that are comfy, grippy and fully waterproof as well as looking great.

They don't have the full description there, they are fully waterproof and sheepskin lined. The only thing is they aren't knee length, but low mid calf. I've worn them loads already. Perfect school run boot for winter.

Try searching for Camel Active boots on Amazon. You can sometimes get some good deals. Some are waterproof and lined but look a bit more everyday casual. I have some for walking the dog and watching my children play sports in the winter.

assuming this is the UK, actual snow boots are of limited use. Proper walking boots are a better bet to deal with rain and slush, which I think is fairly guaranteed over a UK winter. They do also work for snow, mine did me proud in that snowy winter a few years back.

half-calf length is a good maximum length if you are driving, doesn't get caught under the seat.

Orangeanddemons, I love those ones. Can you confirm they're officially waterproof?

Also a couple of the reviews suggest the sizing runs big, did you get your usual size?

They run big. I usually take a 40, and have got a 39, and possibly could have got a38. When they arrive they have a label on them that says waterproof, and another label that says baumwole (?) which is German for wool I believe.

I love mine, and have splashed through loads of puddles in them . I just wish they were a teeny bit longer.

Have a look at Sorel's kids range. DS1 is 10 and has size 7 feet but easily fits into a Sorel 6 and they're much cheaper than the adult range. His boots from Lapland last December still look in great condition.

I've got a pair similar to goddess' link from Cotton Traders. In store they have last year's colours for half price, comfy and warm.

Brilliant boots mine are worn in all weather. Waterproof, fleece lined and very comfy. Timberland also do junior size up to 5.5 so much cheaper. These were 65 because they were junior £120 if I had bought adult!

I'm looking for something similar, waterproof and warm but not for snow and ice. Has anyone had Ariat Windermere boots? They look like the kind of thing I'm after but as I can't try them in a shop am a bit scared of ordering them. Might just bite the bullet as have been lusting for a couple of years and really need new boots this year.
