Sorry for being daft but...how do I wear leggings??

I know, I know...the rest of the universe has been wearing them for decades, but I've always thought I was the wrong shape and size for them. I probably still am, but took the plunge and bought some today. But what do I actually wear them with?? I'm a jeans with everything type, in my 40s, don't even possess a long jumper or tunic thing.

Should I give up now? Grin

Your arse must be covered .

cowbag1 · 09/11/2015 18:21

Golden rule - whatever you wear on top must cover your crotch.

chipsandpeas · 09/11/2015 18:21

i usually wear then with long tops - long enough to cover my bum or dresses

NutCrackerSlacker · 09/11/2015 18:21

If they are nice and thick, ear them as you would skinny jeans - with bum-covering long tops or tunics, long cardis - or with casual dresses and boots.

Etak15 · 09/11/2015 18:22

Wear them as tights not trousers!

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 09/11/2015 22:42

See, this is what I don't get- why not just wear tights instead?i tried them on again and I'm just not used to things being so clingy!!

Etak15 · 09/11/2015 23:04

Ha I hate tights I've got long legs and they never seem to fit right also I'm clumsy and ladder tights leggings are more hard wearing!

Judydreamsofhorses · 09/11/2015 23:13

Leggings are not trousers - either with dresses instead of tights, or at home with a big jumper/hoodie and slippers, so respectable for the postman but not for popping to the shops. I tend to wear them as an alternative to pyjama pants for lounging around the house.

JaceLancs · 09/11/2015 23:18

I personally don't suit them with dresses or tunic length things as am quite short
Agree always make sure crotch and bottom covered and jumper or top is not too tight
I sometimes wear mine with long length t shirt and a boyfriend cardigan
Usually with a lovely slouchy jumper though

HopefulAnxiety · 09/11/2015 23:54

I find leggings far comfier than tights - and easier to find nice quality ones IMO. I wear them with a short dress (just above knee length or shorter) and DMs.

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 10/11/2015 06:58

Thanks all- the solution is clearly to go out and buy some more clothes to accompany them! I got the Sainsburys ones that I've seen recommended lots on here. I think I just felt I was missing some essential item in my wardrobe Grin

I am wearing mine today with a short dress and long cardie. I'll be putting chunky boots on when I go out.
Last night I wore them with a short skirt and jumper, much warmer than tights!

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 10/11/2015 08:41

You see, everyone says wear them as you would tights. But I'm with the OP, why not wear tights?

I buy thick leggings and will often wear them with a long blouse or top that covers (most of) my bum but which would be too short to wear tights with.

I also wear then around the house as lounge-wear.

ZacharyQuack · 10/11/2015 09:01

I find that most of the things I hate about tights are to do with the foot part.

The toe seam always gets twisted and uncomfortable, the leg part gets twisted and uncomfortable, the legs are too long and baggy or too short and droppy-crotchy, and the foot wears out first and gets holes.

Chop the foot part off and solve all those problems. Bonus - you get to wear lovely thick warm socks inside your boots.

wigglylines · 10/11/2015 09:06

I find tights really uncomfortable.

Leggings are waaay more comfortable.

SinglePringle · 10/11/2015 09:10

I only wear leggings as house lounging gear or gym wear (and then they are heavy Lycra, so not leggings as such).

Never wear them out of the house.

Greengagesandham · 10/11/2015 13:14

I only wear them to do my housework in, I only wear them out of the house when I put the rubbish out or under jeans 'long jon' style.

I've worn them as tights but I think actual tights look and make me feel 10 times better.

Having said all that I have spend just over 3 years of my life pregnant so I am sick to death of them as they were the only thing that I could get comfortable in.

amarmai · 10/11/2015 16:19

leggings + layers e.g. thinnish over the bum and crotch top + sleeveless longer vest + ankle/cowgirl boots. I know- you were with me till i got to the last item! worth a try? Also long scarves /poncho when cooler.

jamtartandcustard · 10/11/2015 19:09

I'm wearing leggings with a long line tank at the mo. Is it a good look? Probably not. Do I care? No not really. But I'm 35 weeks pregnant and it's the only comfy thing so I reckon I can get away with it haha x

Destinysdaughter · 10/11/2015 19:11

Long jumper and boots!

MamaLazarou · 10/11/2015 19:17

It's not too late to back out now, OP. Just because you have bought some leggings doesn't mean that you now have to become a leggings-wearer. Wear tights or trousers instead.

Runningupthathill82 · 10/11/2015 19:52

For me, leggings are never ever worn out of the house unless:
a) at yoga
or b) heavily pregnant.
In both cases (a) and (b), arse must be properly covered with a long T shirt or dress.
I don't "get" leggings. Aside from for lounging around indoors in.
When worn with a dress, tights always look better, and when worn with a t-shirt, skinny jeans always look better. So the only point is comfort.
Which, I have to admit, has become an issue at 30 weeks pregnant - but even still, I've only worn them out of the house a handful of times, and even then only when my trusty topshop maternity skinnies are in the wash!

specialsubject · 10/11/2015 20:07

arse covered. Check in the mirror. Repeatedly. And proper underwear not frilly dental floss.

otherwise whatever your shape the view is NOT pleasant for anyone behind you. Believe me.

TheDowagerCuntess · 11/11/2015 06:24

What MamaLazarou said.

Tights are so much more flattering than leggings.
