can you update me on handbag brands

The last time I bought a 'quality' bag, it was a Coccinelle bag from Fenwicks, about 12 years ago. Things seem to have changed rather, and Radley seem to now be expensive! I have no idea where to go for a good quality but not too pricey leather bag. I don't want anything dressy or 'smart' or with tassles and other shiny bits, I want something that is plain, understated but made well. I can't afford Mulberry, but I could go up to £200. Where should I be looking? I like the style of JL Kin, but not sure it they may not be sturdy enough. Redonline used to do some quite nice bags, but can't see them online. Any brands you can recommend?
I quite like this Jaeger bag, but it might look a bit mumsy. I also like this mint velvet bag, but it might be a bit too OTT
Can you inspire me?

I'm a fan of Mulberry but there are plenty on here who really don't rate them anymore. I think the prices are a bit crazy now but mine have all worn well. Which one do you have your eye on?

I would also second Whistles bags for quality, design and value.

I was going to suggest Kate Spade but after having a look they are more like PS300-400

louloubelle2 · 04/11/2015 13:14

One of the Whistles staff told me their bags are made from the same leather as Mulberry. Not sure if that's considered good or bad.

OP - You're right about Radley; prices have really gone up. Have you tried Modalu? They have a sale on and some nice shaped bags which are quite plain and certainly within your budget.

theoutnet.co.uk has some lovely bags.

I have a Vivienne Westwood one on my Christmas list. I haven't had a new bag in about a decade and mulberry seemed to have quadrupled in price in that time.

Was coming on to suggest Kate Spade Grin Although getting something there for 200 could be tricky depending on how big you want it to be.

Also Coach.

Tkmaxx currently has some Ralph Lauren in and they are great quality. They also have Paul Costello bags too which are even more affordable.

I like the quality of Jigsaw bags, particularly in the sale. I have work and casual bags from there and they've lasted well.

SarfEast1cated · 04/11/2015 21:02

I've 'popped' the Cassie Peony&Moore bag on my wishlist, but will have a look in TX Maxx too. I only really like natural leather looking bags rather than anything too structured or glitzy, so hopefully this will do the trick (unless the gold clips are too much. Will look in Jigsaw and Whistles too...
Thanks everyone - you have been marvellous
