Okay, so are dungarees acceptable?

I have rather a hankering for them but worry that I may look like a madwoman.

I was thinking a mid-blue denim (a bit stonewashed but not very).

Yes, if you want them.

Yes, that is my concern. I am 37 and dumpy. I don't want to look like a garden gnome.

Oh they are totally acceptable. I have a dark denim pair that I wear with trainers. I'm 48 and I say wear what the fuck you like, life is too short

Yes, I do see your point.

It depends on your reason for wanting to wear them. If it's to look good, then they're probably not the best item of clothing to fit that bill.

If it's to be comfortable, or to make a political statement against belts, then great, go for it.

What about a jumpsuit as a compromise?

YetAnotherUserName · 03/11/2015 08:54

Agree with Fartic that looking good in a pair of dungarees is probably unlikely, but you should get them if you like them and just enjoy them anyhow.

I have a pair of black denim ones, lovely to wear and I enjoy them even knowing they're not the most flattering item. Wear mine with plain tees or a soft plain shirt underneath.

hugoagogo · 03/11/2015 08:58

Grin at fartic googling German mechanic!

Lemonfizzypop · 03/11/2015 09:02

Noooooo they can look good! Sharon Horgan looks great in them in the first series of catastrophe.

Obviously you need to have the right figure and find the right pair which I think is easier said than done but when it's done right I think they look great!

tbtc20 · 03/11/2015 11:27

LOL @ "political statement against belts"

I had some dungarees when I was about 11. I totally rocked that look.

wigglybeezer · 03/11/2015 11:34

MY mum, aged 75, recently asked me if she could get away with them, she wore them all the time in the seventies and eighties and fancied them again. I said go for it as she is a petite size 8 so she has bought some from Topshop! they suit her but I would hesitate unless you have a boyish figure, I only wear them for gardening.

howtorebuild · 03/11/2015 11:37

I agree, life is too short, wear what you like. exceptions, children's peer interactions, religious events and shopping trips

Jw35 · 03/11/2015 11:40

You need to be about a size 8 or under 7 otherwise they look terrible. Life's too short is a crap argument for bad dressing

PavlovtheCat · 03/11/2015 11:40

No. unless you are a child.

I have a pair of vintage Mickey Mouse ones! 26 size 14 and 5 ft 3! I love them tbh! I roll up the legs though

nilbyname · 03/11/2015 11:56

I bought the topshop ones, black denim. I love them!

DSClarke · 03/11/2015 13:23

There are a lovely pair of cord ones in Toast. They would look great as long as you had great make up and maybe some funky glasses. And were standing next to a potter's wheel, looking moody, in a fjord.

OooooohMissDiane · 03/11/2015 13:25

Only if you're on a Bananarama tribute act.

Knackeredknitter67 · 03/11/2015 13:49

I always look moody, so think mine look great

nilbyname · 03/11/2015 14:13

I'm totally channelling banamrama in mine.

I wear mine with long sleeve wide necked Jersey tips, slightly fitted and also crop tops. Ankle boots with skin showing or Nike trainers- invisible socks!

pommiegirl · 03/11/2015 14:16

No, I think they look awful personally

AliciaMayEmory · 03/11/2015 14:18
