Considering a year of no new clothes for 2016

GoneAndDone · 02/11/2015 18:16

Anyone else done it or considering it?

I buy a lot of clothes so it would be a huge challenge. But I own so many that I'm quite ashamed of it... Could easily not buy any for a year and still have something for every occasion.

Great to have lots of folk on board who are starting from Nov1. I have to also include a ban on buying clothes for my 18 year old student DD. I buy her far too much, which she loves and appreciates, but she is an adult now with a part-time job to fund clothing purchases.

I always seem to be clearing out my wardrobe and not getting anywhere but I'm going to do a determined effort to get it Kondoed.

MerlinToadsHellishMuttonSnuff · 03/11/2015 19:00

I'd love to join in too! I have lots of clothes, yet instead of shifting a few post pregnancy pounds I've been buying more and more and more to fit into Blush

I am now dieting and should have more than enough when I go down a size Smile

I have one very important family occasion coming up next year so I will buy just one outfit (can't recycle as there will be photos which may end up in a frame with other like photos and I don't want to be in the same dress!)

Everything you are all saying rings true with me (discount codes, just one more thing, credit card debt Sad). It has to stop now!

Thank you OP for the great idea.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 03/11/2015 19:03

I did this in 2014- there's a long thread somewhere in credit crunch! Was hard but broke the shopping habit and now I'm still better at not buying crap. Go for it!

louloubelle2 · 03/11/2015 19:50

Something which is really helping me along is remembering you can only wear one pair of shoes at a time, one pair of trousers, one coat etc. Then there are only seven days in a week and just a few months to wear certain items (before the weather changes I mean), that I'm really trying to question the need for so many multiples, that I already own, let alone the need to buy more.

Really not very eloquently put but hope that makes sense!

Dietcherrycola · 03/11/2015 20:45

Yes, I have an attitude I need to sort. Essentially every time I think of something I'd like to wear, it immediately becomes something I 'need' and I have to buy it. Am trying to accept that I could just not. It's not like I'd end up going out naked.

StillShopalot · 03/11/2015 21:40

I am exactly the same as all of you. Off to unsubscribe from emails and blogs etc. I also need to stop buying for dd who is 8. She has more than enough clothes. My worry is......what will I do instead? I spend lots of time researching on the iPad in the evenings whilst the tv is on. May have to start sewing or knitting again.

HoneysuckleAndJasmine · 03/11/2015 21:46

I'm going for a no spend November. I can't think about a whole year but definitely up for November and see after that if I can do Dec as well.....

goingmadinthecountry · 03/11/2015 22:38

I want to join in please - have loads of stuff I've never worn and want to spend money on holidays etc rather than stuff I never wear that I stuff in the bottom of the wardrobe. If I lose half a stone (well, a stone) I'll feel better in some of my posher clothes - not a hard thing to do and if I refuse to buy new stuff I'll have to wear my old things. Win win. This is my life, not a rehearsal, so I don't need to apologise for looking nice.

tweedmouth · 04/11/2015 13:09

im in too! I love buying clothes, but rarely wear them, keep bunging on my jeans and a jumper. i'd like to slow down and work out what i really need, then buy better quality items, instead of random stuff that i've just bought cos i got a discount code. great idea.

GoneAndDone · 04/11/2015 13:11

Good to see so many of you joining me. Smile

I counted my day dresses suitable for autumn/winter and have at least 20 that all fit well and that I like. I could wear a different dress every weekday for a month! And then there are all the skirts and trousers/jeans and tops/jumpers/cardis/shirts...

stillshopalot I could of written your post - and my DD is 8 years old Grin

flightywoman · 04/11/2015 16:34

I did it a few years ago. I had a few rules that I stuck to:

I was allowed to replace things if they wore out but had to try and find it in a charity shop first, if possible.

I was allowed to buy tights if I laddered the ones I had. And knickers were allowed if necessary (it wasn't necessary, I have hundreds!).

The only exemption was a pair of boots that I got for my birthday in the February and which I would have got for Christmas if they'd been in stock.

It was hard at first, but part way through I got really into it and enjoyed the whole thing.

One thing I did was to swap out my winter and summer wardrobes so that when I swapped back later that year it was like new clothes all over again because I hadn't been looking at them. And I still do that now, with the same effect, every 6 months.

Dietcherrycola · 04/11/2015 22:00

Beenandgone. I've never bought that many dresses I like in my life. A dress that fits and that I like is such a rare thing, how do you shop so well?

mirpuppet · 04/11/2015 22:39

I enjoyed the thread Macca

It will be a challenge but I think I can do it.

herecomesthsun · 05/11/2015 08:12

Ah, well I desperately need to declutter the house!! And am starting to low carb again so want to lose weight.

Tempted by some of the flash sales currently but no no...

niminypiminy · 05/11/2015 08:32

I'm in! With one exception: I will be starting a new job in July and I will need to have some special (and sadly rather expensive) clothes as part of the job. I need to buy those but otherwise I'm determined not to buy anything else.

louloubelle2 · 05/11/2015 08:55

I think these projects work better without lots of rules. I love the frugal threads but they always break down when people come on setting boundaries and "I just need this.." or "I'm going to allow massive long list of exceptions" then come back later saying they couldn't stick to their self imposed rules so they gave up.

The point is, imo, to question the intention behind the buying. If you need to replace or buy for for a new activity then buy. Its the frivolous, can't resist for no reason purchases and the reason for that buying pattern that most of us on here need to question. But we will all approach that differently.

Just my thoughts (flowers)

louloubelle2 · 05/11/2015 08:56

also can't insert smileys or emphasis apparently ;)

niminypiminy · 05/11/2015 10:01

I think you are right about the lots of rules thing Louloubelle - they probably function as alibis to let you excuse your purchases.

I don't know whether having to buy what's essentially a work uniform counts, but I put it in in the spirit of full disclosure. Clergy robes aren't exactly fashion items anyway!

GoneAndDone · 05/11/2015 11:57

Congrats on the new job, niminy! I'm surprised robes aren't given to you from the employer!

I agree about the rules, too. There are lots of blogs around from people who've done this in previous years and some have different rules.

For example with buying tights - I would happily buy more if I genuinely run out, but at the moment I just buy them out of habit and have about a 100 pairs. Actually I nearly added some to my Ocado order yesterday without thinking, just because I saw them in the "New" category and thought "hmm yes, 60 denier black tights, always useful...". Managed to stop myself!

I had a bit of a moment when an email from White Stuff about their lovely new collection landed in my inbox this morning. But I know I don't need anything. I had a quick look anyway but obviously won't be buying anything.

To answer Dietcherry... I've found some styles that suit and that I like, and then buy several of the same in different patterns/colours. Some of my favourite brands pretty much do the same dress every year. I'm short but otherwise my figure is kind of "in proportion" so I can easily find things to fit.

OP posts:
Sheezus · 05/11/2015 12:52

I will join, for November /December anyway!
I was going to say delete all favourites and unsubscribe but I see you've mentioned it already.
I don't go out to shop much (ish!) but I am a sucker for an online discount.
I've already unsubscribed I just need to get my head around not shopping.

I may even include the children in this for a while too.
